Alomar, Quantrill among Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inductees

Roberto AlomarThe Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Mary’s, Ontario righted a wrong today, inducting former Toronto Blue Jay Roberto Alomar into the honored establishment. Alomar was slighted from being a first-ballot entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame and missed his ticket to Cooperstown by just eight votes. Joining Alomar will be fellow Blue Jay and Canadian Paul Quantrill, former owner of the Minnesota Twins Calvin Griffith, and the “Father of Sabremetrics” Allan Roth.

Alomar misses call to Hall by eight votes

Roberto AlomarThe 2010 MLB Hall of Fame voting took place on Wednesday, and once all the votes were counted, only Andre “The Hawk” Dawson got the call. For the first time in history, two other players came within 10 votes of induction. Pitcher Bert Blyleven was five votes shy, while second baseman Roberto Alomar was eight short. With 397 votes out of a possible 539, Alomar landed 73.7 percent of the vote, but required 75 percent to make it into the Hall.

Will first time be a charm for Alomar?

Roberto AlomarRoberto Alomar is generally seen as one of the best defensive second basemen of his era. After breaking into the big leagues in a big way with the San Diego Padres, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays with Joe Carter in a blockbuster deal that sent Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez the other way. This turned out to be a launching point for Alomar’s career. He was an All-Star in every season during the 90’s, and in total 12 times. He won four silver slugger awards and 10 gold gloves, and is now eligible for entry into the Hall of Fame. It’s a no-brainer that he’ll make it, the question is whether or not he’ll do so in his first year of eligibility.
