NHL hopes to punish for headshots before the playoffs

The NHL has announced that they want to implement their head-shots rule as soon as possible. There’s just some of the usual red tape to be taken care of first. Two years ago, the league adopted the affectionately-named “Sean Avery” rule the day after Avery was seen blatantly obstructing Devils goalie Martin Brodeur without any other concern for on-ice action. However, the league called it an “interpretation” of an existing rule. That in itself is the NHL’s biggest problem. Many rules are open to interpretation.

The arrival of Spring Training ushers in the season it is named for. It’s an exciting time of year for sports, as it is once again time for baseball. Florida and Arizona play host to well over a thousand players and coaches, and fans flock in for a glimpse at the next boys of summer. But with the entire action taking place in just over a few weeks, it’s not too difficult to become lost in all the action that has little impact on the eight months of baseball that follow.

Retirement coming for Cox, Gaston

This season marks the final one for both Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox and Toronto Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston. These two coaches have a long history and friendship together, going back over 30 years when they played together in the Venezuelan and Texas Leagues. Both have very opposite coaching styles – Cox is known for his occasional angry outbursts, while Gaston can make an umpire self-reflect with a simple wordless stare. Now, the two share a common destination that each will arrive at in very opposite ways.

The Olympic Hangover

The Olympic Hangover is running strong in the world of hockey. It seems like no amount of coffee is waking us up to the fact that the NHL is back on and the players are earning their paychecks once again. The fighting has returned. The real fourth lines have returned. GM Place is GM Place again. But after such a successful and thoroughly entertaining tournament, how many people are truly excited about regular-season hockey; and how many are just waiting for the second round of the playoffs to begin?

We’re nearing that point of the year where people begin to think about the All-Star games and the Pro Bowl. Millions of fans worldwide are sending in their votes for who they would like to see in the spotlight. It is only because of the 2010 Winter Olympics that the NHL is not having an All-Star game this season, but their selection process is similar to the other major sports. The fan-selection process is highly contested by many who argue that the fans lack the proper dedication to vote for the “true” stars in sports. But which fans are right?

Jason Bay’s future is in his hands

Is Jason Bay selling out? This is always a tough question to ask, and fans are often polarized by such a question. By not agreeing to any of the offers given to him by the Red Sox, he is testing the patience of the Boston fan base. Some would say that Bay is fully entitled to test the free agent market. He has earned the right to play where he wants and for as much money as he can get. Others would say that Bay has a good thing going in Boston. The fans love him, the team loves him, and he’s just plain good. Both arguments are correct. It just comes down to what Bay wants to do.
