Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers push for postseason

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Jered WeaverThe Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been a playoff contender for years, and after missing the postseason last year, they’re back in the mix in 2011, trailing the Texas Rangers by four games in the AL West with 41 games left on the schedule, 10 of which are against those same boys from Arlington. They’ll play a four-game series this week and then a three-gamer on the last weekend of the month. Then, and we can only hope the division is still to be decided, the two teams will close out the season with three more games against each other.

Justin VerlanderThe Detroit Tigers' Justin Verlander is making a strong case to start the 2011 MLB All Star Game for the American League. He threw his second consecutive complete game on Sunday and now has recorded a “W” in five straight starts. During those, he’s pitched 41.2 innings with a 0.86 ERA, 37 strikeouts and a 0.65 WHIP. As Lee continues to throw 10+ strikeouts in a game, setting career highs and playoff records along the way, Burnett make his 2010 playoff debut in Game 4 of the ALCS on Tuesday night. Burnett’s start comes at a pivotal time for the Yankees, as a win will even the series at two games apiece, but a loss will put them into a hole where another loss will end their season.

Matt Garza continues the Year of the Pitcher with a no-hitter

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Matt GarzaWhen the media dubbed 2010 “The Year of the Pitcher,” they weren’t kidding. Tampa Bay’s Matt Garza continued the spectacular season for hurlers on Monday night by throwing the fifth no-hitter of the year. Garza joined Ubaldo Jimenez and Edwin Jackson in mere no hitters, as well as Dallas Braden and Roy Halladay who have both been perfect this season. Throw in Armando Galarraga’s 28-out not-quite-perfect game and you have one heck of a season, and it’s still July.
