Simon GagneAt first glance, a seventh versus eighth seed series in the Eastern Conference final could make you scratch your head. But if you don’t know the story about how the Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens became the final two teams in the east, then obviously you’re not a hockey fan. With an identical point total of 88 at the end of the regular season, to have expected either of these teams to be alive at this point would have been crazy, yet here they are, and they’ll battle for the rights to play for Lord Stanley’s Cup starting next Monday night. But who has done the more unthinkable?

Andrei MarkovThe back end of the Eastern Conference playoff spots is very tightly contested; a welcome change from most other areas of the NHL standings. The Flyers, Canadiens and Bruins hold the last three positions, each with 82 points and five games remaining. The tiebreaking procedures gives Philadelphia a huge edge over Boston with three more wins total, but a tough final week could be deadly if they don’t play right. They’ll get their chance to start the end right tonight when they welcome those Canadiens.

Montreal-Ottawa clash worth more than two points on Monday

Jaroslav HalakAfter six straight wins, the Montreal Canadiens felt the bitter taste of defeat at the hands of the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Montreal dropped a 3-2 shootout loss to the Blue and White to keep their consecutive point streak alive. At the other end of the spectrum, the Senators continue their freefall, losing a 5-4 decision to Dallas. The two clubs now find themselves tied at 78 points and share fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, and will face each other Monday night to decide who is more worthy.

Canadiens set to embark on two-week road trip

Andrei MarkovIs there any team lower than the Montreal Canadiens? With 10 games played in December, the Canadiens are 3-6-1 for a whopping seven points, and now, they head out for a seven-game road trip that will take them through the New Year before ultimately, and perhaps mercifully, returning home on Jan. 3. Accompanying the team as usual will be Andrei Markov for their first game against the New York Islanders on Saturday night, but for the first time since their first game, Markov will lace up the skates.
