Interleague play resumes with same old rivalries and complaints

If nothing else, interleague play allows the baseball world to focus on rivalries other than that of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, but frankly, not enough teams have those “natural” rivals that baseball would like them to have. Proximity alone isn’t enough. You can’t argue that interleague games aren’t important. Every game is important. The crossover games though are little more than a cheap attempt to boost sales. The good news for MLB is that it works. But is it really fair?

Interleague play on its growing edge

Interleague play wraps up this week, and if nothing else, it certainly seems like things have become a little stale. Overall, the American League has dominated their older brothers since 2004, and that hasn’t changed this season. With the novelty of the in-season, cross-league games worn off, it seems that every year more people are starting to question the necessity of Interleague play going forward. MLB is aware that there are those with their problems, but it does not look like things will improve soon.

Who needs a designated hitter? Not the Arizona Diamondbacks; or at least not when they have Dan Haren on the mound. Haren made hitting look easy on Friday night when he single-handedly took on the Toronto Blue Jays. Haren gave up four solo home runs in an 8-6 victory, but contributed to his own cause on the offensive side by cracking a pair of doubles – one after faking a bunt – and driving in three runs.

Jays and Phillies series moved to Philadelphia

Roy Halladay won’t be going back to Toronto afterall. Blue Jays president and CEO Paul Beeston announced on Tuesday that the series between Toronto and Philadelphia on June 25-27 has been moved from Rogers Centre to Citizens Bank Park, due to the G20 summit being held literally next door to the Rogers Centre on the same weekend. Rumors have been swirling about the possible schedule change for month, and now that it has become official, it has become the number one sports story in the city.

Justin Duchscherer pitched 7 2/3 innings of 1 run baseball en route to an Oakland A’s 7-1 victory over the Florida Marlins. Duchscherer’s ERA on the season is now under 2, he won his 8th game of the year yesterday.
“I think everybody’s goal is to be an All-Star pitcher,” Duchscherer said when asked about returning to the All Star Game. “I made it one time, so I have to say, ‘Yeah’ (I can make it again).”
