Now that the Toronto Maple Leafs mercifully have been officially taken themselves out of playoff contention, the members of Leafs Nation have begun asking who they will turn to in goal for the 2011-12 season. After beginning the season with veteran J.S. Giguere and supposed-goalie-of-the-future Jonas Gustavsson, the Leafs found themselves playing behind most teams thanks to miserable netminding. With continued injuries to Giguere’s groin and Gustavsson’s heart, the Leafs looked way down the depth chart and brought up James Reimer.

Toronto Maple Leafs swap Versteeg with Flyers for draft picks

The Toronto Maple Leafs fire sale continued on Tuesday when GM Brian Burke dealt forward Kris Versteeg to the Flyers for their first-round and third-round picks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The Leafs have also made two separate deals with Anaheim in the last two weeks with the Leafs picking up Joffrey Lupul, Jake Gardiner, a fourth-round pick in 2013 and Aaron Voros, only having to give up Francois Beauchemin and a seventh-rounder in 2011. These deals all seem to imply that Burke is silently admitting his rebuilding plan isn’t working out, so he’s making the move to Plan B.

Nobody cared about who would go first. Few more care about whether the Sedin’s would be split up. What everybody wanting to know going into the NHL All-Star Draft was who would be left sitting alone on the floor before being the final “pick” of the draft. The inaugural honors went to Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The humiliation of the title is being abated by a $20,000 donation to charity in his name and a new car for the Leafs’ forward.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are struggling to win games lately, or as Leafs fans call it, performing to expectations. Leafs head coach Ron Wilson and GM Brian Burke have reportedly not had conversations about Wilson’s future, but after scoring just 15 goals in their last nine games, something is clearly wrong with Toronto, and as always, Wilson and his job have become the center of attention in the media. Wilson has struggled to find a winning lineup of players, but that may also result from an incredible lack of depth among his players.

Tomas Kaberle back with the Toronto Maple Leafs after summer of nothing

The Maple Leafs’ defenseman Tomas Kaberle and coach Ron Wilson say they like each other. Every other indication is that they don’t. Kaberle arrived back in Toronto for training camp and was immediately questioned by the media about the situation. This has been a continuous story older than the Kovalchuk contract, but it’s almost at the point where we can see if actions truly speak louder than words when these two interact with each other when the season begins.

Tomas Kaberle continues to wear Toronto Maple Leafs blue and white

The summer’s ongoing story between Tomas Kaberle’s no-trade clause and the Toronto Maple Leafs who was in trade talks with other teams possibly came to an end last night. Kaberle’s contract allowed him to be traded up until 12:01 a.m. EST, but that deadline came and passed and Kaberle is still the property of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment. It looks like he’ll report to Toronto’s training camp and wear the blue and white for another season, unless he waives his no-trade clause at some point, but that likely won’t happen until the trade deadline.

Blockbuster breakdown: Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames were part of the first of two bold trades involving the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday. The blockbuster trade saw the Flames give up defensive strongman Dion Phaneuf, as well as right winger Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect Keith Aulie. In exchange, they picked up forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers, and defenseman Ian White. Calgary’s offensive woes have plagued them in January, and the addition of three mid-level forwards, they hope to provide a shot of adrenaline that will carry them through the playoffs.

Blockbuster breakdown: Anaheim Ducks

As part of Sunday’s blockbuster trades, Ducks GM Bob Murray added a couple of key pieces from Toronto to his struggling team. The Ducks picked up forward Jason Blake and goaltender Vesa Toskala. Blake is the key piece for Anaheim as they’ll try to make a late push to grab a playoff spot from one of the other slumping teams in the West. They had to give up former Stanley Cup winner and current backup goaltender J.S. Giguere to get them, which in their eyes was a bargain.

It seems blockbuster trades aren’t entirely a thing of the past in the NHL. But it took a blockbuster GM like Toronto’s Brian Burke to do it. With two colossal trades on Sunday, Burke added defensemen Dion Phaneuf, winger Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect Keith Aulie from Calgary, giving up forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers, and defenseman Ian White. The second deal sent forward Jason Blake and goalie Vesa Toskala to the Ducks in return for goaltender J.S. Giguere.

Leafs’ big gamble paying off

Have the Toronto Maple Leafs reached desperation? Since last summer, when Leafs GM Brian Burke merely mentioned the word “playoffs,” fans have taken his meaning completely out of context and are now reeling against the GM for his lies and lack of results; not to mention his team’s awful play this season. Phil Kessel, acquired from Boston for three draft picks (two firsts and a second), has struggled, and in a Burke-esque move, the Leafs have called up forward Tyler Bozak from the Toronto Marlies AHL team to center the first line.
