Fan backs Santana’s bold claim

Johan SantanaI wrote an opinion story a few days ago about how Mets pitcher Johan Santana blatantly told the media that he was the best pitcher in his division and how that was wrong. A reader left a comment calling me an idiot saying I didn’t know anything about Santana and that he’s the highest paid in his division, as if that warrants him calling himself the best. The reader then said that Santana was asked a stupid question to begin with. Regardless of the ignorance of the commenter’s words, I began wondering if there was, in fact, any merit to his opinions. There aren’t.

Bobby Crosby rounds the bases
Bobby Crosby hit a solo home run in the very top of the first inning of Sunday’s game between the Atlanta Braves and Oakland A’s, but the Braves were able to rebound to notch a 5-2 victory, improving their record to 22-21. The Braves had some nice offense yesterday; Brian McCann doubled in the first inning to tie up the game. In the 2nd, Yunel Escobar singled in Kelly Johnson and Gregor Blanco. To drive the nail in the coffin, Kelly Johnson hit a two RBI triple in the bottom of the 8th inning, to put away the Athletics.

“We just didn’t get it done,” said Crosby. “We had lots of opportunities but couldn’t capitalize. … I expect we’ll be fine. Right now we’re struggling a little bit. Maybe we’re pressing a little bit.”

Carlos Delgado hits a solo home run in the 7th inning
Entering Sunday afternoon’s game, Carlos Delgado had just 3 hits in his last 9 games. However, the slumping New York Met hit 2 home runs against the Atlantas Braves en route to a 6-3 Mets victory, giving the Mets the series victory over Atlanta. Despite hitting the 2 home runs, Delgado didn’t emerge from the dugout following the 2nd shot for a curtain call.

“The way I look at is I hit a solo home run in the seventh inning,” Delgado said. “I’ve got a great deal of respect for the game. I don’t think that’s a place for a curtain call.”

Kevin Gregg and Mike Rabelo
The Florida Marlins had everything working Tuesday night. Scott Olsen, Renyel Pinto and Kevin Gregg combined to pitch a shutout, and new Marlin Wes Helms drove in his first run of the year. Olsen would pick up the win, he’s 2-0 this season. Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens was the tough luck loser, he threw 6 innings of 4 hit 2 run baseball but still managed to pick up the loss.

“When you give up two runs, you’ve got to win, it’s as simple as that,” Braves manager Bobby Cox said, regarding the fact that Jurrjens lost tonight as a result of no run support from the Braves offense.
