Just let them play, but play correctly

We’re being bombarded with talk about the staggering number of too many men penalties in the first round of the 2010 NHL playoffs, and some are starting to question the merit of the rule. We’re closing in on two dozen called – about one in every two games. People are asking if this penalty really impacts the flow of the game or should the refs just put their whistles in their pockets and let the boys play?

Canada’s journeyman last spotted in San Diego

Matt Stairs will never retire from baseball. The 42-year old not only has yet to resort to riding out his career as an American League designated hitter, he’s also found a home in San Diego and will see time as both a first baseman and an outfielder. As a Canadian, it was hard enough for Stairs to find his way into the majors, but it seems that it’s been even harder to take him out of them.

Rockies win; Beckett suffers first loss

Garrett Atkins and Kaz Matsui both go 3-5 from the plate as the Rockies beat the Red Sox 7-1, giving Josh Beckett his first loss since September 27, 2006. Atkins hit a grand slam in the third inning, which gave the Rockies a 5-0 lead and Atkins his fifth homer on the season; he also had a single and a double.

Last season, Atkins hit .329 with 29 homeruns. So far this year, he’s been struggling, and Rockies fans have been questioning whether or not Atkins was worth playing. So far in June, however, Atkins has had a resurgence, batting .342 (13-for-38) and knocking out two home runs, five doubles, and nine RBIs in 11 games, bringing his season average to .242.
