Yunel Escobar heading north in five-man deal

Yunel Escobar woke up on Wednesday morning wearing Atlanta Braves navy blue and scarlet. He went to sleep imagining himself in Toronto black, silver and blue. In a surprising five-man deal, Escobar and teammate Jo-Jo Reyes left the Braves system in return for Toronto’s power-hitting shortstop Alex Gonzalez and minor league prospects Tim Collins and Tyler Pastornicky. The former is known as a 5’7” strikeout pitcher and the latter an inexperienced shortstop with a high ceiling.

The long ball is not enough

There’s something to be said about a team that knows how to hit the long ball. That thing is that if that’s all they can hit, they’re still going to lose. Take the Toronto Blue Jays, who lead the majors in long balls with 115. They also just dropped two of three games to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Jays were limited to just seven runs in the series, every one of which came in as part of their four homers.

Blue Jays turning heads with fifth straight win

Is there a team with more to prove than the Toronto Blue Jays? Before the season began a week ago, many already wrote the Jays off as the basement dwellers in the American League East. Six games into the season, they own sole possession of first with a 5-1 record after taking two from Texas to begin the road trip and following that up with a sweep of Baltimore, who were supposed to have leapfrogged the Jays in sheer talent. The Jays sent a message to the nation by winning their fifth straight.
