The New York Mets Move On to the NLCS

Mets win! There are many happy people in Metsland right now, especially for those that HATE the New York Yankees.  While the Mets moved on to the next round of playoff series, the Yankees failed to achieve that goal.  There will be a Subway Series no more.  The Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers last night, reaching the National League Championship series and will face the winner of the San Diego Padres/St. Louis Cardinal series.  The Mets lineup, unlike their crosstown counterparts, came up big and scored enough runs to dash any hope the Dodgers faithful may have had in advancing.

Before the series, the Mets learned that they would be without their ace, Pedro Martinez, not just for the playoffs, but not until after the All-Star break sometime next season.  That had a lot of Mets fans in a tizzy and regressing to their well-known pessimism (I’m a New Yorker, born and raised in Queens with TONS of Mets fan friends, so I know).  The further news of losing Orlando Hernandez made the fans feel worse, or at least in denial.  However, despite those key injuries, it was their bread and butter - the batters - that allayed all fears.

The Mets are still in the hunt for a World Series… and the Yankees are not.  The hardcore Mets fan (such as my very good friend, Chris Sannella who lives in Yankees country) can sit back, wait for the next game and thumb their nose at all the Yankees fans that gave them hell.  Go get ‘em!

To quote a favorite Met from decades ago, “Ya Gotta Believe!”
