Jermain Taylor Retains Middleweight Title

Hopkins vs. Taylor

Bernard Hopkins fought Jermain Taylor in a rematch for the middleweight title.  In their first encounter, Taylor was crowned new undisputed middleweight champion.  This time around Taylor won again and retained the title in a close judges’ decision, where there were no knock-downs.

There was some buzz generating around this fight, because their first encounter was a bit of a bore for non-boxing enthusiast, so many experts expected Hopkins to come out more aggressive this time around.  In the first encounter, Hopkins took it very conservatively thinking the judges would give him the benefit of the doubt, in giving him the edge in the scorecards, considering he was the champ at the time.  He was wrong, and in the rematch, he took the same conservative approach.

It looks like an end of an era for Hopkins, who has had some convincing victories over greats like Oscar De La Hoya, and Felix Trinidad.  Hopkins is known to be very crafty in the ring, considering the last two fights versus Taylor, he might be conserving his body and not enduring any brain damage as he is soon to be 41 yrs old, ancient for boxing standards.
