Heath Ledger’s “Dirty Laundry”
Posted by Elaine Furst Categories: Movies, Editorials,
The death of Heath Ledger last week seemed to bring out the worst in our fellow “journalists”.
After watching the TV coverage of Heath Ledger‘s passing, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Don Henley’s song, “Dirty Laundry”. For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, “Dirty Laundry” is Henley’s commentary on the decline of journalism and how the people who cover the news are really just failed actors and news coverage is all about finding the “dirtiest” story about someone and running with it whether it’s true or not. (Henley wrote the song fifteen years ago.) The lyrics that particularly came to mind in light of Ledger’s passing are:
“Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody’s pie
Love to cut you down to size, we love dirty laundry”
The three “journalists” that appeared to be most guilty of this were:
Nancy Grace. On her show, Grace called on a number of “professionals” (i.e mental health “experts”) who prattled on about Ledger’s “alleged” state of mind at the time of his death and what the meaning of all those pills scattered around his body “probably” meant. I didn’t really pay too close attention to what they were saying until the term “bipolar disorder” came up. I then did what hopefully any sane, sensitive person would do. I changed the channel and put on QVC. (If I want to watch schlock, I’ll buy it from QVC.)

Britney Spears Hospitalized Again
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Meltdowns, Videos, Breaking News,
Another day, another hospitalization. Early Thursday morning, more drama unfolded outside Britney Spears’ home. (You can see the video, after the jump.) And while the scene was strangely reminiscent of the January 4th incident, there were many things that made today’s events different.

- This was a planned event. Britney’s new psychiatrist - the one Sam Lufti referenced in his conversation with Barbara Walters - had apparently sensed this day would come. Realizing it would take a bit of work to get her to the hospital through a throng of photographers, etc., she worked out details with the LAPD. When the psychiatrist arrived at her home last night, she felt it was time to get her some help. With one phone call, she set the escort plan in action.
- Britney was a willing participant. No locked bathroom doors this time around. The singer - who reportedly hadn’t slept in three days - was very calm when police arrived.
- Her mother was actually there. Instead of hiding away in another state, Lynne Spears was in Britney’s home at the time of her departure (as was Lufti and Alli Sims).
- Another day, a new place. She was not taken to Cedars-Sinai this time. Today she’s at UCLA Medical Center.
- No K-Fed sighting. Since Kevin Federline already has the kids with him, there apparently wasn’t a need to be around.
- It looks like she might stick around. Although Brit never stayed the suggested 72-hours the last time she was hospitalized, it looks she might this time.

‘Entertainment Tonight’ Pulls Heath Ledger Video
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Syndication, Cancellations, Editorial, News,
Who says public pressure doesn’t work?
Just a few weeks ago, Dr. Phil did an about-face and canceled plans for a Britney-centric show. (He claimed it was an act of consideration for the family.) Now Entertainment Tonight and The Insider are throwing out the word ‘respect’ as the reason for one of their own cancellations.
The two tabloid shows were scheduled to air a video involving Heath Ledger and drugs this Thursday night. The 2006 tape - which was practically aired in its entirety for Wednesday’s promo - showed the actor in the vicinity of drugs (and drug users) at the Chateau Marmont. Although it wasn’t clear if he was taking anything in the teased bits, his audible comments made it clear he wasn’t doing something his girlfriend (Michelle Williams) would approve of. He is also heard talking about their recently-born daughter, Matilda Rose.
Although I have never seen the full video, the shortened version was more than enough. The teaser’s over-the-top narration was extremely salacious, gratuitous and insensitive. I was so bothered by what was shown….and I apparently wasn’t the only one. Late Wednesday, reps for both shows confirmed the sweeps segment had been pulled. Here is a copy of the short statement printed on ET’s website:
“Out of respect for Heath Ledger’s family, “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Insider” have decided not to run the Heath Ledger video which has been circulating in the world media.”

Michel Gondry remakes trailer for Be Kind Rewind in the style of Be Kind Rewind
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: New Line, Comedy, Trailers,
Michel Gondry continues to make it difficult to argue that he is a cinematic mastermind. In the video above, you will find a trailer by Gondry that is a remake of the official trailer for Be Kind Rewind. The remake is done in the style of the movie. So, this is a remake of a trailer about a movie about a couple of guys who have to remake movies themselves, done by two guys who have to remake the trailer for the movie themselves. I don’t even know if I am making sense anymore, but check the video, as it is the epitome of awesomeness.
Bleeding Edge TV 244: A look at Drobo Storage Robot
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Gizmatic, Short Bytes, Accessories, Apple, CES, CES 2008, Design, Features, PC / Laptop, Podcasts, Storage, Videocasts,
One of this year’s hottest topics is storage. It seems like we’re about two steps away from getting flash drives as prizes in cereal boxes. With the release of OSX Leopard and its Time Machine app, backing up computers has become easier than ever. Enter Data Robotics’ Drobo storage robot.
As easy to use as a flash drive, the Drobo has four slots to accommodate 3.5” SATA I or II hard drives, and automatically makes redundant copies of data in order to protect from single drive failure. Drobo uses USB 2.0 to make backing up quickly, and is fully operable with OSX and Windows 2000 and up.
Retailing at $499, Drobo comes with everything you need to get started except the hard drives. It’s available now from online retailers.
Hillary Clinton, Paris Hilton Return to Letterman
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Late Night, Talk Shows, CBS,

In the next few days, the Late Show with David Letterman will be welcoming two ladies who - for two very different reasons - have a lot at stake.
This coming Monday, New York Senator Hillary Clinton will be making a sit-down appearance with the late night host. Although visits from the former First Lady are not unusual (she did have a short bit on his return show in January), this particular date comes at a critical time for the presidential hopeful. The in-studio chat will happen Feb. 4th…one day before the very important Super Tuesday. Will she be able to sway anyone outside of New York? Who knows? But she’ll be sure to keep smiling while trying. (And just for the record, Sen. Barack Obama also made a recent appearance on the show. He read Dave’s nightly Top Ten list just last Thursday.)
After the uncomfortable experience Paris Hilton had back in September, you’d think a reunion with Letterman is the last thing she’d want to do. But camera time is camera time, and you know how much Hilton loves to be in front of one. Oh - and she has like this movie to promote or something. (Then again, she did have a perfume that got very little mention the last time she was there.)

Our Verizon FiOS customer service nightmare: Why won’t they protect my private customer information?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Broadband, Editorial, Features, Internet,

Seeing as we’ve been experiencing a ton of customer service issues with our Verizon FiOS service for the past 8 months, we figured it was time to put out a warning to you guys. After all, we typically hear that the FiOS Internet service is remarkably amazing, and people have been dumping cable in droves when FiOS becomes available in their area. Hey, there is good reason to. Where we are at, right outside Seattle, our choices are slow DSL, Comcast at 8.0 down and 768k up, or FiOS with a max speed of 30.0 down and 15.0 up (which is the plan we are on.)
Now let’s be clear here, we love the FiOS service. It works fantastically, it has never gone down in the 8 months we’ve been using it, and it’s, well, fast.
So what is the problem? To put it bluntly, Verizon has shown that they don’t care - at all - about protecting their users private, confidential information. Now, why would we make a statement like that? Check it.
