The guys at MacRumors have done a fantastic job at illustrating how the alleged next iPhone would look like with its new taller screen and how the aspect ratios of movies and apps would utilize and benefit from the extra display real estate. Purported leaked parts indicate that the next iPhone will adopt a 1136x640, 3.99- or 4-inch screen with a pixel count of roughly about the same as the iPhone 4 and 4S Retina display of 329dpi, give or take a pixel or two. Tweetbot for Mac is progressing quite nicely, and today has moved from alpha to beta with the release of version 0.8.0. Unfortunately, thanks to Twitter's new asinine rules for developers, only those who has already authorized Twitter for Mac to be used with their Twitter accounts can use the app, so if you weren't an alpha user, then this won't do anything for you. Here are the changes and improvements that are found in Tweetbot 0.8.0:
- lots of bug fixes
- can paste images into new tweet window again
- can copy tweets on timeline
- can do ‘open in new column’ (they also have keyboard shortcuts)
- multi-column swiping and keyboard support much improved. Use tab shift/tab to move between columns.
- better keyboard support: status detail + many other views
- profile view: can scroll user information so can see more tweets
- drag and drop tweets has been improved
- gap loading works properly now
- context click on tweet action buttons in timeline
- did I mention we fixed a bunch of bugs too?

e-Book publishers shell out $69 million in price-fixing allegation case

In the midst of Apple and ebook publishers collusion allegations brought forth by the Department of Justice (DoJ), Massachusetts Attorney General, Martha Coakley (Democrat), is tossing in her hat by filing a civil antitrust lawsuit. Three book publishers are shelling out over $69 million, $2 million of which is going to Massachusetts customers, to settle out of court. The ongoing lawsuit alleges that Apple got together with publishers and devised a plan to raise ebook prices in Apple's own iBookstore, which is in direct competition with Amazon's Kindle ebook store. Amazon is known for selling it's ebooks at rock-bottom prices, often at the expense of publishers and authors. So, although it appears that the DoJ's lawsuit greatly benefits consumers, who it really benefits is Amazon. Look at it this way: Amazon makes its lion share of money from many different sources, therefore, it can afford to sell ebooks at a loss since consumers buying through Amazon Kindle are exposed to advertisement promoting everything else they sell. Meanwhile, other booksellers are going out of business unable to compete, inadvertently creating a monopoly where Amazon reigns supreme. In the long run, who is this really benefiting? The way I see it, the DoJ lawsuit, although good intentioned, will eventually have the opposite effect of what its trying to achieve; and while now it appears to benefit consumers, in the end, Amazon wins.
Ebook publishers Macmillan and Penguin have not settled and Apple vowed to fight the allegations in court.

Just how thin will the next iPhone be?

It's pretty much a given that Apple likes to make its products as thin as possible, and it looks like the next-generation iPhone 5 will get that same treatment. An image has been put together by Sohu that shows what the next iPhone looks like compared against the iPhone 4S and iPhone 3GS in terms of thickness. As you can see, the front and back glass don't protrude from the metal frame, making the next iPhone even thinner if the leaked design is to be believed. We'll know for sure on September 12.

Western Digital My Passport for Mac offers 2TB, USB 3.0 external storage

Western Digital announced an update to its My Passport line of portable hard drives today with the My Passport for Mac, which top out at 2TB of storage space and include USB 3.0. It also offers out-of-the-box Time Machine computability, and rugged WD Nomad casing. They start at $99 for a 500GB model, and top out at $199 for the 2TB drives.

TiVo Stream: Watch TiVo on mobile devices, $129 on September 6th

TiVo has announced its latest product, the TiVo Stream. Set to hit stores on September 6, the TiVo Stream is a network transcoder device that will allow users to stream content directly from a TiVo Premiere unit over to portable and mobile devices. At launch, the Stream with work exclusively with iOS devices, so if you own an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you'll be able to use up to four of those devices at once to watch content from your TiVo box, without the hassle of interrupting someone who's doing it old-school and watching TV on the couch. You'll be able to pick up the TiVo Stream for $129.

We are a few days removed from the monumental decision that was handed down in the Apple vs. Samsung trial, where Apple pretty much steamrolled Samsung in the verdict. Curious how the jury reached the decision that it did? Check out the video after the break. It's an interesting look at the process that Jury Foreman Vel Hogan and team used to determine which patents were infringed, and how much money to award in damages. Other interesting tidbits? The Jury Foreman is a PC user who owns no Apple products, and not one of the jurors owned an iPhone.

The feature is called Wi-Fi Plus Cellular, it helps keep the data flowing, and it can end up costing you some unexpected cash if you aren't careful.

Stabil-i iPhone case promises to eliminate camera shake

After reading through the Stabil-i Case Kickstarter page and viewing the videos, we've gotta say, we're pretty excited about the prospects of a product that promises to make videos you shoot with your iPhone look much more fantastic by virtually eliminating the shakiness. You know what we mean. Your smartphones is typically the camera you have with you at all times, right? If you wanna capture a moment on video, it's likely that you'll bust out your phone rather than a camcorder. The Stabil-i case gets rid of the "shaky cam" look, bringing a level of smoothness to your iPhone videos. A version for the next-generation iPhone 5 is even in the works. The project is currently raising funds on Kickstarter, and has raised $23,140 out of the $80,000 goal, and there are just 4 days left.
