How iMessage phone number merging will work in OS X 10.8.2
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Software,

Aside from built-in Facebook integration, another major feature coming to OS X 10.8.2 is iMessage phone number merging. This functionality will allow you to receive any iMessages sent to your iPhone phone number on any approved iOS devices or Mac of your choice. In other words, if someone has your phone number and sends you an iMessage to that number (rather than your Apple ID email address,) Mountain Lion 10.8.2 will be able to receive and display them in the Messages app, and you'll be able to respond to them from there as well. It's the final missing piece in making iMessage device agnostic (well, as long as it's an Apple device.)
To merge your phone number with your Apple ID after you update to OS X 10.8.2, simply launch Messages and log in to iMessage. You'll then get a prompt that asks if you'd like to associate your phone number with your Apple ID. If so, just select Yes, and you're done! OS X 10.8.2 is set to be released this fall.

Students being pulled out of Chinese classrooms to build iPhone 5?
Posted by Jason Diaz Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Rumors,

We at Gear Live have been hearing early morning reports from Shanghai Daily that hardware manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., AKA Foxconn, has been allegedly pulling Chinese students from classrooms in preparation to build Apple's iPhone 5. The social network, Sina Weibo, has been filling up with claims that at least 200 students from the Huaiyen Institute of Technology were being escorted to Foxconn factories under the guise of being enrolled in a "school to work program" or "Internship." The students will allegedly be paid $224 per month to work 12 hour shifts, six days a week. Now, possibly as a result of public scrutiny, Shanghai Daily is reporting that students are being brought back to classrooms and instead are being offered to volunteer for the so-called school to work program.

Apple says it never gave UDID info to the FBI
Posted by Jason Diaz Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Handhelds, Mods / Hacks,

Apple has chimed in on the saga of twelve million leaked iOS UDIDs. Apple claims that they never gave that information to the FBI, nor did the FBI ever request it from Apple.
"The FBI has not requested this information from Apple, nor have we provided it to the FBI or any organization. Additionally, with iOS 6 we introduced a new set of APIs meant to replace the use of the UDID and will soon be banning the use of UDID" - Natalie Keriss Apple Spokeswoman
Unique Device Identifiers, or UDIDs, are somewhat similar to a serial number or a social security number for devices. It is comprised of about 40 alphanumeric characters that basically identifies you as the device owner. It could be used for targeted ads and marketing analytics, or it can be utilized for development purposes like app and software distribution.

The next iPhone will be called “The New iPhone”
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Rumors,

Earlier today Apple invited select press to its September 12th iPhone event, and the invitation had a number 12 casting a shadow in the shape of a number 5. This caused many to speculate (including us!) that this confirmed that Apple be calling its next smartphone the iPhone 5. Well, an image published by iPhonenieuwsblog tells a different story. In it we see the packaging for the new iPhone. As you can see, the display has six rows of app icons instead of five, and it's specifically referred to as "The new iPhone" on the packaging. So, there you have it. We're inclined to go with this, as it just makes perfect sense. The next iPhone will simply be known as "the new iPhone."

It’s official: Apple will unveil iPhone 5 on September 12
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Corporate News, Handhelds,

It's been rumored and expected that Apple would announce the iPhone 5 on September 12, and this morning it's been confirmed. In fact, based on the official invitation from Apple, not only has the date been confirmed, but the name of the next iPhone seems to be locked in as well. As you can see above, the 12 is putting off a shadow in the shape of a 5. Of course, the iPhone 4 was actually the fourth iPhone that Apple released, but if the next device truly is called iPhone 5, it will be the sixth iPhone released by the company. Odd, but for the average consumer, we think it makes the most sense (new iPad, notwithstanding.)
The iPhone 5 is expected to sport a new 1136x640 16:9 widescreen display, a thinner profile, and ship with newly redesign Apple headphones. Check out all the iPhone 5 news and rumors we compiled thus far.

Redesigned Apple headphones appear on video
Posted by Jason Diaz Categories: Accessories, Apple, Music, Portable Audio / Video,

The fine folks at Tinh Tê have managed to snag what appears to be a new, redesigned pair of the iconic Apple earphones. The alleged iPhone earphones appear cone-shaped, perhaps so they may fit snugly in the ear canal. Good news to all small-eared readers out there: this redesign would probably keep them from popping out while bumping to music, or running with the Nike+ app. If the redesign turns out to be true, they would be a welcome addition to be included with the next-generation iPhone. All the rumors are pointing to a September 12 Apple iPhone announcement. Thanks to Google translate, it is understood that the earphones are more compact than previous models. According to the reports, the sound quality is much improved and the bass is significantly louder. Video after the break!
