Watch Styropyro Turn Mercury and Neon Into Lightning in a Bottle (Video)

The result looks like something out of a wizard's workshop: a hand-held tube that flickers and crackles with light every time it moves. And the wild part is that the basic trick is not new at all. People have been watching mercury glow in the dark since 1675, long before anyone had the faintest idea what electricity actually was.
Here is what is actually going on. When you slosh mercury around inside an evacuated glass tube, the friction between the metal and the glass strips off electrons. That is the triboelectric effect, the same bit of physics that makes a balloon stick to your hair. The astronomer Jean Picard stumbled onto it in 1675 when he noticed the empty space above the mercury in his barometer glowing faintly as he carried it around a dark room. For centuries nobody could explain it. They just called it "barometric light" and moved on.
Styropyro's version cranks that faint shimmer up to eleven. By pulling most of the air out of the bulb and dropping in a noble gas, he gives the electric charge something dramatic to light up. The current ionizes the gas, and the gas answers by throwing off a vivid glow. Neon flashes red. Krypton burns blue. It is the same principle behind every neon sign you have ever walked past, except here it is packed into a bottle you can hold in your hand and set off with a flick of the wrist. Bring a Tesla coil anywhere near it and the whole thing erupts, reacting to the electric field crackling in the air around it.
The catch is right there in the ingredients
Mercury. That is the catch. This is a demo built around a neurotoxic heavy metal sealed inside thin glass, which is exactly the combination you do not want to drop on your kitchen floor. Anthony knows it, which is part of why the clip landed on his secondary channel rather than the main one. As he puts it, "Don't try this at home, obviously, but goddamn does it look cool." He is right on both counts.
What makes the video worth your three minutes is not just the light show. It is the reminder that some of the coolest physics has been sitting in plain sight for 350 years, waiting for someone with a vacuum pump and a healthy disregard for their own safety to make it glow again. Picard saw a ghostly light in a barometer and had no clue why. We know exactly why now, and somehow it is still mesmerizing.
