PS3 To Cost Arm, Leg, Launch Near Thanksgiving, Rip Off Wii Controller

Posted by Chris Cardinal Categories: Video Games

Sony just concluded their PS3 press event and the news is pretty big and only somewhat unexpected. The 60 GB edition will run for $599 (which they convenient converted to $699 Canadian, for the Mounties out there.) while the 20 GB version will run for $499.

It’s set to launch November 17th in the US.

The biggest surprise of the evening came when Sony unveiled the PS3’s new controller, complete with 6-axis tilt sensors (X, Y, Z and pitch, roll and yaw) that require no external device. (Though the external element of the Wii is what allows it to be completely spatially aware and sense its distance from the screen.)

This really shows that Nintendo is on to something with shifting their focus to unique gameplay concepts. I’m just thinking that for Sony it’s more of a novelty, but perhaps they’ll make good use of it.
