Gurman Says Apple’s Foldable Is Called iPhone Duo, Supports Apple Pencil, and Starts at $2,000

The foldable iPhone has a name, and it is not iPhone Ultra. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman posted last night that Apple settled on iPhone Duo, with a $2,000 starting price for 256GB, storage running up to 2TB at roughly $3,000, Apple Pencil support, and two colors: dark blue and white. It ships in October.

Apple has confirmed none of that. The keynote starts at 10:00am PT today, which means every line of this gets confirmed or corrected within a few hours. Gurman's track record on Apple's roadmap is about as good as it gets from outside the building, so it is worth taking seriously. It is still not official until Apple says it on stage.

Apple is eating the memory costs

Gurman explains the $2,000 in one clause: Apple is "eating the additional memory costs." He reports Apple blew past its own cost targets because of the memory shortage, absorbed part of that on the base model to hold the line at $2,000, and is recovering it from people who buy the bigger capacities.

Memory prices have been climbing all year as AI data center buildouts hoover up supply, and phone makers buy from the same pool. Apple could have priced the base model at $2,100 or $2,200 and blamed the market. Instead it took the hit to land on a round number, and let the $3,000 top configuration carry the difference. If you were wondering why the storage jump from 256GB to 2TB costs about a thousand dollars, that is why.

Announced today, buyable in October

An October ship date means Apple walks on stage this morning, shows you its first new iPhone form factor since the X, and then you wait weeks. That is unusual for an iPhone. It is not unusual for a first-generation Apple product, and it is what you would expect from a device with a hinge and a bending display that has to survive its first million owners.

The practical effect is a long runway of hands-on impressions, teardown speculation, and Samsung ads before anyone can actually buy one.

Two thousand dollars is a lot of phone money

Samsung has been selling foldables in this neighborhood for years, and they remain a niche. Most people in the US spend well under half of $2,000 on a phone, usually spread across a carrier bill they have stopped reading. Apple is not aiming at those people with this one.

Apple Pencil support is the piece that separates it from the competition on paper. Samsung dropped S Pen support from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year because the digitizer layer added thickness. If Gurman is right that Apple kept it, Apple decided the pen was worth the millimeters. That is a real difference, assuming the stylus is any good.

A note on the forecasts

We wrote recently about Counterpoint projecting Apple at 25 percent of the foldable market in 2026 for a phone Apple had not announced. Today the phone gets announced. The forecast still has to survive a $2,000 entry price and an October start.

What to watch at 10am

The name, the $2,000 base, the 256GB starting capacity, the October date, the Apple Pencil, and the two colors are all checkable against the keynote. Gurman also lists an A20 Pro chip, Apple's C2 modem, dual 48-megapixel rear cameras, and a magnetic hinge, per MacRumors' summary of the reporting.

If Apple opens preorders today for an October ship, that is one story. If it shows the phone and gives no date at all, that is a different one. We will know by lunch.
