Apple’s iPhone Duo Foldable Is Real, Starts at $1,999, and Ships October 23

The foldable iPhone stopped being a rumor at about 10am Pacific. It's called iPhone Duo, it opens like a passport into a 7.6-inch screen, and it starts at $1,999. Preorders open October 16.
Mark Gurman had the name, the Apple Pencil support and a $2,000 starting price the night before, which we wrote up this morning. He missed by a dollar. What the leaks couldn't tell you is how Apple got a bending screen to survive a pocket, and that is where Apple spent most of its stage time at the "Surprise and Shine" event.
Two screens, and one of them is a normal phone
Closed, you are holding a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display (5.36 inches measured as a standard rectangle), which is a phone. You can answer a text on it without opening anything. Open it and you get 7.6 inches (7.58 as a rectangle) of the same panel, with a nano-texture finish that cuts glare. Both screens run ProMotion, Always On, and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The matte finish is the difference between reading something outside and tilting the phone around until the sun is somewhere else.
The hinge is the part that has to not fail
Apple says the hinge is engineered from more than 100 components. The enclosure is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, and the hinge cover is 3D printed with a micro-blasted texture. Ceramic Shield covers the back, Ceramic Shield 2 covers the front with what Apple rates as three times better scratch resistance, and underneath the folding display sits a custom polymer cover layer Apple says is up to 40% stiffer than the industry alternatives.
The spec that will decide how people feel about this phone in two years is IP68. Foldables have a long history of losing arguments with pocket lint, and a sealed hinge is the single hardest thing to get right in this category.
Apple did not publish a thickness or a weight. For a phone whose whole pitch is that it folds, that is a strange number to leave out of the press release, and it is the first one to look for when reviewers get their hands on it.
A20 Pro, and cameras that had to fit inside a fold
The A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process. Apple claims a 6-core CPU up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU up to 40% faster, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine with twice the compute.
The rear cameras are a 48MP Fusion Main with a 2x optical telephoto and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. The front camera uses Center Stage and can rotate the frame by itself, so you are not thinking about whether a half-folded phone counts as portrait or landscape. A second FaceTime camera sits underneath the inner display, which is how Apple kept a cutout out of the big screen. Video records at 4K120 in Dolby Vision, Cinematic effects run up to 60fps, and Audio Mix gets an update.
Two batteries, one on each side
Splitting the battery is the obvious move once the phone has a spine down the middle. Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer one, and up to 24 hours of mixed use. Wired charging hits 50% in about 20 minutes, and MagSafe or Qi2 gets there in about 30.
What it costs and when you can get one
$1,999 buys the 256GB model, or $83.29 a month for 24 months. Storage runs 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, with the top configuration at $3,199. Apple Upgrade leasing starts at $57.99 a month on a 24-month term. The colors are Star White and Night Sky.
Preorders start Friday, October 16 at 5am PT. It goes on sale Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries, with 28 more countries and regions following on Friday, October 30.
The parts Apple left off the slides
The iPhone 18 Pro is in stores on September 18. The Duo is five weeks behind it, so the flagship iPhone news cycle will have moved on by the time this ships. Apple Pencil support, one of the few things the Duo can do that a Galaxy Z Fold cannot, is not there at launch either. It arrives later this year over USB-C.
And Apple is late. Samsung has been selling folding phones since 2019, and spent this morning posting about it. "Let us know when you're done reheating our leftovers," the company wrote on X. Fair shot. It is also what you post when a much larger competitor has just validated your category.
John Ternus, who took over as Apple CEO this year after Tim Cook moved to executive chairman, put it a different way: "iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what's possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone."
Who this is for
Not most people. $1,999 is roughly three decent midrange phones, and Apple still has not said what this one weighs. The buyer is someone who already knows they want the big screen: the person who reads and marks up documents on a phone all day, or who has been eyeing Samsung's foldables for six years and refused to leave iOS over it.
Apple made a foldable, and it wants $1,999 and six more weeks for it. Nobody outside Apple has folded one a thousand times yet. That part of the review starts October 23.
