AirPods Max 2 Review: Apple Fixed Everything (Except This!) (Video)

Six years. That's how long we waited for a real AirPods Max update, and the AirPods Max 2 are basically the AirPods Pro 3 dressed up in a much nicer coat. Same H2 chip, same transparency mode, but now with 40mm drivers that finally have the headroom to breathe.

The short version: this is the best-sounding, most feature-rich pair of headphones Apple has ever made, and depending on what you were hoping for, it's either going to excite you or annoy you. At $549, I think you deserve to know which one you're going to be before you buy.

The H2 chip is where everything starts, and you feel it first in the noise cancellation. Apple says the ANC is 1.5x stronger than the original based on IEC standardized testing, and the new adaptive algorithm tunes each of the eight mics individually and reacts in near real time, so walking from a quiet building onto a loud street gets handled before you even notice.

Transparency mode, which I've long thought is the best in the business, also got better: a higher frequency range, more natural processing, and loud sound reduction that softens a sudden car horn or slamming door without killing your awareness. There's even an adaptive EQ trick where the H2 hears air leaking through the seal your glasses create and compensates on the low end. Tiny detail, big difference.

On the smart features side, a lot of this is finally coming to the Max for the first time. Adaptive Audio blends ANC and transparency automatically so you're not picking a mode and living with it, which has been my favorite way to use the AirPods Pro for years. Conversation Awareness drops your volume and brings up voices when you start talking, Personalized Volume learns your habits across different environments, Voice Isolation cleans up your calls, and you can now nod or shake your head to answer Siri. Bluetooth moves from 5.0 to 5.3 for lower latency, and Game Mode on Mac, iPhone, and iPad delivers ultra-low latency so audio lines up with what's on screen.

Sound quality is the real payoff. The new high dynamic range amplifier, the same one in the AirPods Pro 3, was the missing piece. The original amp didn't have enough headroom and had a higher noise floor, which capped the sound no matter how good the drivers were. That ceiling is gone. Compared to the first Max, the bass is more accurate and fuller without being bloated, the mids are richer, the tone is warmer, and there's more separation and clarity in busy tracks. Spatial audio with head tracking still sounds great, and the studio-quality mics are a genuine step up.

Now the baggage, because Apple didn't fix everything.

Lossless 24-bit/48kHz audio is still wired-only over USB-C. No high-res over Bluetooth, and on a $550 headphone in 2026, that stings. The smart case situation hasn't changed one bit, there's still no power button, and the design is identical, no IP rating, so keep them out of the rain.

And here's the one a lot of people won't discover until it bites them mid-session: if you plug in for wired lossless while gaming, you lose access to the built-in mics entirely, so your teammates can't hear you. Wired audio and mic support should just work together, and they don't.

Bottom line, the AirPods Max 2 are a technical masterclass in what a chip upgrade can do for your ears. The features are fantastic, but the legacy quirks are still here. Apple is clearly prioritizing smart features like Live Translation, Adaptive Audio, and Siri interactions over the wireless lossless audiophiles have been asking for since 2020.

If you live in the Apple ecosystem and can make peace with the case and the lossless caveat, these are some of the best over-ears you can buy. If wireless lossless was your hill, Apple didn't climb it this time, so stay right where you are.
