Box Office Breakdown: Dear John Brings Down Avatar
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Disney, Fox Searchlight, Lionsgate, Sony, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Drama, Family, Music, Romance, Science Fiction, Comedy, Box Office, Lists,

Dear John—And they didn’t think we could do it. Take that, blue people! XOXO, Savannah
After an exhausting seven weeks at #1, Avatar found itself in entirely new territory: sitting back at #2. Although the film had broken nearly every record in the history books (and padded another $22.9 million to its domestic total), the 20th Century Fox feature ended its win streak nine weeks shy of E.T.‘s mark.
Taking the lead from James Cameron was the latest weeper from author Nicholas Sparks. Dear John - starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried - was the counterprogramming winner during Super Bowl weekend. The romantic drama earned an impressive $30.5 million and came narrowly close to besting the record set during the same sports frame in 2008. (That was when Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour generated $31.1 million.)

Box Office Breakdown: Avatar Has the Edge Over Mel Gibson
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount, Sony, Touchstone, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Period, Romance, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists,

Despite success in recent years as a director, Mel Gibson hasn’t been seen in front of the cameras in quite some time. Unfortunately, he couldn’t have picked a worse weekend to make a return.
Gibson’s new film, Edge of Darkness, debuted to a respectable $17.2 million over the past three days. While that may - may - have been enough for a first place finish at any other time, the Warner Bros. feature brought in approximately half as much as that other film.
Avatar, with its $31.3 million take, is now approximately $10 million shy of officially taking the domestic crown from Titanic. (The 20th Century Fox film finally become the worldwide leader during the past week.) If the sci-fi extravaganza remains at #1 for
nine more weeks,it’ll officially tie E.T. for that record.)

Box Office Breakdown: Avatar Just Hours Away from Worldwide Record
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories:
Are we there yet?
Despite six weeks of chart-topping numbers, Avatar still hasn’t brought down the Titanic. Yes - the movie did finally surpass The Dark Knight on the domestic charts. And yes - the 20th Century Fox feature is now the top international earner at $1.29 billion. But James Cameron’s earlier blockbuster is still slightly ahead - by approximately $2 million - as far as worldwide receipts are concerned. (Monday’s ticket sales should change that for Avatar.) The 3D-adventure is also approximately $49.1 million shy of becoming the domestic king of the world.

Paul Bettany Leads a Double Life
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Action, Biopics, Period, Science Fiction, Celebrity Gossip, Upcoming Releases,
Paul Bettany leads a “double life.”
The actor says that even though he is known for appearing in serious movies such as Creation, he loves getting the chance to indulge in his childish side and is relishing doing his own stunts for Priest.
“There’s a sort of double life that I have as far as acting. I love making films like Creation about Charles Darwin, but I would be lying if I… The truth is when I was a kid my mom gave me a set of holsters, two holsters and guns and a cowboy hat. I ran around shooting things. And I suddenly thought, ‘Well, it’d be really nice approaching 40 to have a ball doing that,’” he said. “It feels even better because I have a bunch of friends who can put me on a wire and throw me up into the air.”
