The Mysterious Trailer Preceding ‘Transformers’

J.J. AbramsFor the millions of you who stepped out to see Transformers this past week—you probably walked away with one plaguing question:  What was the name of the movie for that trailer I saw?

Despite having seen the production logos, for a moment I wasn’t entirely sure I was watching a film teaser.  It almost seemed like a cheap commercial.  There were shots from a hand-held camera at some type of going-away party….flashes of lights in the sky….then building pieces (including the Statue of Liberty’s head) hurtling around.  Then nothing.  About the only thing indicating that it was a movie was a mention of the release date.  Then when I saw J.J. Thankfully, a bit more information has since been released to whet my appetite.  The movie, titled Cloverfield is being directed by Max Reeves, a co-creator of the Abrams’ show Felicity.  The film is being produced for Paramount Pictures, the same company that is working with J.J. on the next Star Trek movie.

The film’s details have been very hush hush—those appearing in the movie agreed to participate without even a script to read.  Though we do know now that it deals with a monster attack in New York.  Additionally, the cast is filled with relative unknowns. But given J.J.‘s penchant to put friends in his projects, I suspect someone from the cast of Felicity or Alias will be seen somewhere.

Cloverfield is not even scheduled for release until January 18th.  Now that’s a teaser.
