Derek Cianfrance Talks Film vs. Digital, Humanity’s Imperfection

Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance recently spent some time chatting to THR at the Toronto Film Festival to talk about his latest film, The Place Beyond the Pines.

In addition to briefly explaining how he likes to tell stories about people and their relationships, the director/cinematographer gives his opinion on the big film vs. digital debate (he shot his latest one on 35mm) and his favorite part of the film involving Ryan Gosling and Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark."

Later in the clip, Cianfrance describes what he looks for when telling stories: "What I'm really looking for as a filmmaker is when things break… I'm looking for failure, I'm looking for the imperfections. There's enough perfect things in the world. I think we're humans 'cause we're imperfect."

The Place Beyond the Pines was recently picked up by Focus Features at the festival. No word yet as to a release date, although it is slated for release next year.
