Sony Computer Entertainment’s re-release of the classic PlayStation title, Parappa The Rapper, is headed to the United States this July. Sony Computer Entertainment America today announced the title’s release. For the most part, the title is a straight-up re-make of the original, with a few changes. First, the graphics have been remade to fit the PSP’s widescreen format display. Second, the company has added support for wireless networking. In ad-hoc mode, gamers will be able to compete against three other players wirelessly, and SCEA will also be providing downloadable content via the PSP infrastructure connection.

Parappa The Rapper will be hitting Japanese PSP consoles on December 7th. The game is basically a port of the original Playstation version with the graphics modified to fit the aspect ratio of the PSP screen. It has been previously reported that the game would support the PSP ad hoc networking mode and game sharing to support up to 4 person multiplayer, but now Game Watch is reporting that gamers will be able to utilize the PSP infrastructure mode to access the Parappa site to download additional songs. The downloads will not include new stages; the new songs will merely work with existing stages. While not as exciting as a completely new Parappa game, the ability to add content over the internet should help extend the play value of the port.

It looks like Sony’s quirky “Simon” variant, PaRappa The Rapper is coming to the PSP. According to a report from Famitsu, the game’s graphics will be re-formatted to accommodate the PSP’s wider screen, and a wireless multi-player mode will be added. Up to 4-player multi-play will be supported. When each gamer has a copy of the game, any of the stages from 1 through 6 can be played via multiplayer, and it looks like with one copy, gamers can share stage 1. Merely looking at the screenshots online is enough to get those crazy songs stuck in a gamer’s head. The game is targeted for a winter release date in Japan.
