Julien Macdonald to Launch Bespoke Service
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Fashion Designers, News,
Julien Macdonald will launch a bespoke service in 2012.
The designer has experienced such an increase in demand for his made-to-measure service that he has decided to set up his own atelier which will be devoted to helping clients create "special outfits" from UK sourced fabrics.
"Working closely with a client to create a special outfit is so much fun. I love the idea of being able to do more of that. I'm really excited about setting up the atelier. I've always tried to source UK fabrics and use UK manufacturers for my ready to wear collections, so having a dedicated in-house atelier to produce 'Made in Britain' pieces for my clients is a dream come true for me."
Julien's new venture will be supported by an in-house workshop wholly devoted to the bespoke British service. Julien has previously revealed he hoped to tone down his designs as he believes some of his past creations have been too daring: "I know now that you can be glamorous and sexy without having to show it all. I'm constantly learning and finding out about new techniques. It's like asking a great reader 'Have you read all the books in the world?'"

Julien MacDonald Clarifies Plus-Size Statement
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows, Health & Beauty, Models, News,
Britain’s Next Top Model judge and fashion designer Julien MacDonald recently came under fire for negative comments towards plus-size models. “There were no plus-size models. This is a serious show… You can’t have a plus size girl winning—it makes it a joke,” he said of the television show. Now MacDonald is back tracking
clarifying his statement.
“I absolutely think that plus-size models stand a chance of having a long term modeling career… But as I have already said, in certain sectors of the industry they are in much less demand. In certain parts of the fashion industry samples are made in smaller sizes, therefore it is far more difficult for a plus-size model to be successful.”
The former creative director of Givenchy also commended fellow British designer Mark Fast, who has been heralded for using plus-size models in his latest shows: “There have been some great initiatives in the fashion industry to use plus-size models. And it is great that Mark Fast is challenging convention. I have always loved strong, sexy, empowered women who walk well.”
You know that you’re part of the minority when Karl Lagerfeld, who had consistently put down
plus-size
“round” women, featured size 12 model Crystal Renn in his 2011 resort show.
