Alber Elbaz Did H&M Line So That All Women Could Afford Lanvin
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Fashion Designers, News,
Alber Elbaz says the inspiration behind his H&M collaboration was to give all women the chance to wear his creations. The Lanvin artistic director has designed a range of affordable clothing for the Swedish high street brand and is keen to appeal to females who can't normally afford to buy his pieces.
"It was an exercise for me to understand what is the relationship between high fashion and fast fashion. Ninety-five per cent of women cannot afford Lanvin, so let them have a taste. It's like if I was living in a palace and opened some doors and said, 'Have tea with me, taste the food.' It's not about giving away something that belonged to someone else; it's about sharing."
Elbaz also insisted he didn't do the collaboration to be cool, he just wanted the Lanvin to be "relevant."
"The beauty of our business is that we can do things and then move on. This project with H&M was about being relevant to a moment. I have always said that we are not a cool brand. It's not about being cool or not. We try to be relevant. I'm not going into the cool club. It's not my address." The range hits stores this month.

First Look: Lanvin for H&M
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Editorials, Fashion Designers, Models, News,

H&M has finally thrown fashion junkies a bone.
After initially keeping their lips sealed with headless promos making fans guess who was to head the next designer collection, H&M finally announced Lanvin would be the line. Then there were the couple viral videos that showed a behind-the-scenes look at the campaign with the clothes censored and an Alber Elbaz tirelessly putting his creations to paper as two model French maids waited on him. In both instances, the H&M clothes didn't appear, and weren't expected to appear until the November 2nd online fashion show... until now!

Matthew Williamson to Launch Diffusion Line
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, Fashion Designers, News,
Matthew Williamson is launching a diffusion line.
The British designer - whose styles are often seen on the likes of Sienna Miller and Cat Deeley - is creating a range with Italian company the Mariella Burani Fashion Group, in a move which he believes couldn’t be timed better.
“It will be womenswear but all will be revealed in due course - watch this space. It just felt right - we’ve been here for 13 years and it’s time to take the label further. We’re ready for it now.”
“That’s a good question, it’s still being worked on at the moment. I’m just a workaholic - I just needed even more to do,” he said when asked what the collection would encompass.
The label’s chief executive Joseph Velosa believes the new clothing range will be seen in a similar way to Marc by Marc Jacobs and See by Chloe: “It will carry all the essence of the Williamson woman but it’ll be for her younger sister and at a lower price point. We’ve been around for a long time and this is the next step.”
The collection is due for release in February 2011.

Lanvin Revealed as H&M Designer
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Fashion Designers, News, Rumors,
While they initially had people guessing, H&M revealed Lanvin to be the next fashion house to collaborate with the global brand.
The Swedish high street brand - which has previously collaborated with Stella McCartney, Madonna and Karl Lagerfeld on cheaper ranges - has created a range of luxury clothes in conjunction with Lanvin’s artistic director Alber Elbaz, who has previously said he would never work with a mass market store.
“H&M approached us to collaborate, and to see if we could translate the dream we created at Lanvin to a wider audience, not just a dress for less. I have said in the past that I would never do a mass-market collection, but what intrigued me was the idea of H&M going luxury rather than Lanvin going public. This has been an exceptional exercise, where two companies at opposite poles can work together because we share the same philosophy of bringing joy and beauty to men and women around the world.”
H&M’s creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch added the brand was “thrilled” about the collection: “We are thrilled about Lanvin’s collection for H&M, it is such an exciting moment. Lanvin will bring to H&M a luxurious French tradition that is also modern and playful. It is very much a Lanvin collection, using their cut and tailoring, with lots of focus on form and details for both women and men.” The range will hit stories on November 23.

Target Recruits Zac Posen to Design Line
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, News, Sales,
Speculation concerning the economic stability of Zac Posen’s label emerged amidst the lay-offs and announcement of a lower-end line. Posen seems to have found a solution that many other designers have opted for as of late: a diffusion line.
Posen is set to collaborate with Target, which is not necessarily a new team-up—Posen previously designed a one-off collection for Target Australia, which he claims to have done for the free trip!
With Rodarte’s Target line hitting stores next month and Jean Paul Gaultier’s collaboration in March, Posen’s will not be available until April 25. Torturous, I know, but at least we’ll have time to recover from Fashion Week!
Excited for Posen’s line, or plain sick of the cheaper products?

Christian Louboutin Turned Diffusion Line Down
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, News, Rumors, Women, Footwear,

Even though it seems as if everyone is doing a diffusion line for either H&M, Target, or other major retail chain, there’s one designer who is counting himself out: Christian Louboutin.
While he’s happy to shell out his time and effort for Barbie, it seems as if the shoe designer has no other collaborations in mind: “They [H&M] proposed me to do the diffusion line and I declined… Not that I don’t think it’s an interesting idea, but it’s a lot of work really, so it’s just difficult for me to do it.”
When asked about whether he would consider such a project in the future, my dreams of purchasing an affordable pair of his godlike creations were crushed. A girl can dream, eh?

Prepare Yourself for the Jean Paul Gaultier-Target Collab
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, News, Rumors, Sales, Women,
It really is the new rage among fashion designers. From Thakoon to Proenza Schouler and Anna Sui to Rodarte (as well as many, many more), Target is taking no clear break when it comes to penning the deals with collaborators.
Whose creations will we be expecting next? Jean Paul Gaultier! Rumors about Gaultier signing on with Target went around for awhile until receiving confirmation this weekend. In fact, I don’t think that I’ve been this excited for a diffusion line since Alexander McQueen.
For the Designer Collaboration series, Target asks that the designer select a muse: “Jean Paul Gaultier for Target pays tribute to the American woman, celebrating the forces of style both past and present in American pop culture, the retailer said.”
Interesting… Well, we’ll just have to wait until March 7th, when the pieces hit stores (although I’m sure photos of the line will have leaked before then) to figure out just what that means.

First Look: Rodarte For Target
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, News, Rumors, Women, Accessories, Dresses,

Although its due date isn’t until December 20th, pictures of Rodarte’s Target line have surfaced on the internet, and now I’m even more anxious!
Not only do I want the Madonna-esque gloves and mustard (yes, that’s right) lace dress, but I think that I just may be more upset after having seen the images—my closet cannot wait two months for those pieces.
I have to admit that the ribcage graphic print dress (seen after the jump) is one that I do not fancy; however, there are 54 other pieces in the collection. Why can’t it be December 20th already?
