Janelle Monáe Won’t Dress Sexily
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, News,
Janelle Monae doesn't want to dress sexily.
The "Tightrope" singer feels her voice should be the main focus of people's attention when they are watching her perform, rather than her body.
"There are no women who perform fully clothed - still to this day there aren't. To me, that was a problem, to say 'If you want to be in the music industry, you need to be able to sell sex' ... I want to be in control of my body. I don't ever want a man or a woman to tell me to dress that way. I think its up to me."
Janelle, 28, also said she never takes too long thinking about her stage costumes, favoring black suits, because worrying about her wardrobe interferes with her creativity. "If I have to think about my outfit for longer than, like, two minutes, I've wasted my time. Who wants to think about, 'What am I going to wear to this performance?' I need to be focusing on creating, changing the world," she told Britain's Marie Claire.

+ This month's latest Elle cover model, Nicki Minaj did her best impression of a vapid fashion journalist humorously asking all the wrong questions to herself.
+ Madonna made a statement with her boy scouts outfit when she presented a GLAAD award to Anderson Cooper. In a nearly 12-minute long speech, the singer lashed out at the scouts organization for its gay ban.
+ Though Harmony Korine's latest film Spring Breakers doesn't even hit theaters until Friday, there has been enough buzz generated about it to get Opening Ceremony to collaborate with the filmmakers on an exclusive summer collection.
+ Kim Kardashian has been spotted in many tight-fitting outfits, despite her very pregnant state; however, the reality star was spotted at the premiere of her new movie Temptation in a chic black lace look appropriate for an expectant mother.
+ It's been rumored that Kate Upton will be covering the June issue of Vogue, which would be her first time on the front of the American fashion glossy.

Versace to Revamp Lady Gaga’s Tour Wardrobe
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, Fashion Designers,
Lady Gaga has asked Donatella Versace to reinvigorate her tour outfits. The "Judas" hitmaker has revealed the Italian fashion designer will be giving her stage outfits a "face-lift" when her Born This Way Ball world tour reaches North America in January.
"THE BORN THIS WAY BALL is getting a face-lift for America. I heard rumors @Versace IS CUSTOM DESIGNING ALL THE CLOTHES AND NEW LOOKS. (sic)" she wrote on her Twitter.
The 26-year-old eccentric pop star is a huge fan of Versace's striking designs, and she recently stepped out in the iconic safety-pin dress first worn by Elizabeth Hurley in 1994. Donatella is known for giving garments a feminine and risque flair, so Gaga - who has memorably worn a meat dress and worn a Kermit the Frog outfit - can expect some revealing new stage outfits to show off her curvier figure.

Lady Gaga Makes a Wig with Lights
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, Hairstyles,
Lady Gaga has created a fibre optic wig inspired by the Disney Princesses.
The "Judas" singer - who is renowned for her love of eccentric stage outfits - worked on the special creation with her collaborators the Haus of Gaga for six months, and claims the hair piece was inspired by the idea of one of the animated characters at a dance music rave.
"Hi everyone, this is Gaga. So I wanted to show you one of the newest inventions from the Haus of Gaga - this is a hand-made wig by Frederic Aspiras. It's an innovation that myself and Tara and Frederick came up with, with my friend Chris and we've been working on it for six months. Over six months. And we are going to light it up for you so you can see. So the wig is made up of a mixture of real human hair and the finest fibre-optics in existence - they move and feel like real hair. It was handmade. The hair was inspired by taking a Disney Princess and putting her in a rave," she said in a video post on her blog (seen after the jump).

Fashion Police: JLo Channels the White Witch
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Celebrities,
There's just something really wrong about Jennifer Lopez wearing what could pass as a figure skating costume in the middle of August.
The former American Idol judge returned to the stage in Anaheim, California wearing a whole lot of furry white stuff and sparkles. While we know how Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Nicki Minaj are constantly trying to out-high fashion each other, isn't JLo above that? Is her ice queen attire a cool surprise for summer, or is it just wrong?

Lady Gaga’s Designer Sister
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows, News,
Like sister, like... sister? Lady Gaga's younger sibling is to create the costumes for a new off-Broadway show. The Born This Way singer's 19-year-old sibling Natali Germanotta - who is currently studying fashion design at legendary New York fashion school Parsons - is to design the outfits for Simon Says, which is about three strangers who meet at a seance.
Last year, Natali interned at Allison Parris helping backstage at its Fall/Winter 2010 show, where she impressed with her work ethic and style. "Natali has an edgier sense of style like her sister. Initially when she went to the Grammys a few years ago, she wore one of our little lace trapeze dresses, but she styled it up with leather and hardware. She is so nice and so easy to work with. She is such a great girl," Allison said.
Gaga, 25, recently revealed she feels famous because of her style: "I used to save up my money to buy Mugler vintage archive. I used to save up all my money. I had to have it. That's really what fashion is all about for me. I already felt like I had made it before I had made it. All of you made me feel like a star before I was. Thank you for believing in me."
Black Swan Expected to Influence Spring Fashion
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows,
Prepare yourself for a bombardment of tutus, feathers, and knits -- Rodarte fans are swooning everywhere! It's bad enough that people are clocking in more hours at the gym because of Black Swan, but now clothing designers are banking on the film's popularity in hopes that consumers will flock to their stores, too.
Costume designer Amy Westcott worked with Rodarte duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy in bringing the gothic fairytale looks to life. "We had an affinity for the subject matter," Kate said. She added that it helped her understand the "darker nature and twisted kind of underbelly" of the ballet world.
Lagerfeld's Spring/Summer 2011 collection already reflects a feminine-with-a-dash-of-darkness theme, complete with dark eye makeup, sheer materials, and jeweled fabrics. BCBG Max Azria and Lipsy of London are due to sell tutus come this Spring.
Amidst this dance craze, let's not forget that there's always American Apparel.

Mulleavy Sisters Guest Edit Lula Issue, Style Kirsten Dunst
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Celebrities, Editorials, Fashion Designers, News,
Despite the high pressure demands of designing their Rodarte line, Kate and Laura Mulleavy somehow managed to both design costumes for Black Swan and guest edit next month's issue of Lula!
In the Fall/Winter 2010 issue -- on newsstands now -- the creative duo styled a Kirsten Dunst editorial shot by their friend Autumn de Wilde, designed Charlotte Gainsbourg's cover dress, and cajoled Tavi Gevinson and Sofia Coppola to contribute to the fashion mag.
The magazine also includes behind-the-scenes shots of Natalie Portman in Black Swan designs, which show more of the intricacies the sisters are known for that were lost somewhat in the film. Nan Goldin shoots the main editorial featuring Gainsbourg, which was styled by Leith Clark.
All in all, the few previews of the magazine that are out (seen after the jump) are sure to please any Rodarte/Mulleavy fan (or anyone who adores fashion, anyway!).

Fashion Police: Anne Hathaway Gets Catty For Halloween
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Celebrities, News,

Much to my eyes' dismay, it seems like catsuits aren't leaving the red (or pink) carpets anytime soon. First was Kelly Osbourne, and now Anne Hathaway wore a more flattering leopard printed version for the Lanvin Halloween/H&M party.
Regularly listed at the top of best dressed lists, it's almost painful to look at the photos of Anne from the party. While it was Halloween, perhaps she could have put more effort into the costume (is it too much to ask that the mask match the color of the rest of her outfit?) or ditched the mask altogether.
Let her off the hook for having fun, or is this simply unforgivable?
