Items Du Jour: Britney Goes Platinum, Tyra’s War on “Plus-Size” Term

Kim Kardashian+ The Kardashian trio unveiled their latest clothing collection, which they launched in collaboration with British retailer Lipsy. Unsurprisingly, Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe model off their floral, curve-hugging dresses in the adverts for the line (perhaps it's the only way they'd be able to sell it?). Major kudos that they're not of the typical sequined and glittery New Year's Eve dress fare, but at the same time, I can't imagine women flocking to the stores (or in Americans' cases, online store) for a summery frock when they're looking for something festive.

+ Britney Spears surprised fans with a Twitter photo showcasing her new hair color: platinum blonde. Love it or leave it?

+ Tyra Banks seems to have joined Jennifer Lawrence in the war against negative body image words, claiming that she refuses to utter "plus-size," instead opting for "fiercely real." Not sure how quickly the latter will catch on, but it's a start!

Jay-ZIs trouble brewing in Barneys and Jay-Z's fashion paradise?

The high-end retailer just announced that they will no longer be throwing a fundraising party tomorrow night to celebrate the launch of their collaboration collection with the rapper. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the event has been canceled," read a statement from Barneys.

The news comes after Jay-Z has been pressured by fans to withhold his collection with the retail store once they properly address the racial profiling allegations against them. There is no word, however, that Jay-Z had a hand in cancelling Wednesday's party.

Proceeds of the first day's sales from Jay-Z's items and ten percent of the profits from the overall store that day are intended to go towards his Shawn Carter Foundation - the same organization to which the fundraising party was intended to benefit.

Naomi Campbell: I’ve Got Nothing Against Victoria Beckham

Naomi Campbell and Victoria BeckhamNaomi Campbell insists she never tried to "pin-point" Victoria Beckham as racist.

The 43-year-old supermodel launched a campaign to expose racial discrimination in the fashion industry last month and published an open letter with a list of fashion houses "accused of being guilty," with the former Spice Girls star one of those criticized for using just one non-white model in her London Fashion Week Show. However, Naomi insists she meant nothing personal against Victoria and even called her directly to discuss the problem in the industry as a whole.

"I called Victoria and I spoke to her. I don't want to pin-point anyone. It isn't a blame game. Everyone's name was on that letter because they'd done it. It could have been completely unintentional. She is one of the designers on there like anyone else."

The document - which was addressed to the governing bodies of the fashion industries in New York, London, Paris and Milan - also criticized various, labels including Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Chanel, Armani, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli and Marc by Marc Jacobs, for not using models of color but Naomi insists she wasn't worried about upsetting her friends in the industry.

Rihanna Asked to Leave Mosque During Photoshoot

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, News,

RihannaRihanna was asked to leave a mosque after an "improper" photoshoot.

The "Stay" hitmaker was kicked out of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi after posing for photographs, which "did not comply with the terms and conditions" of the place of worship, and without obtaining permission. A statement from the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, published today in local Abu Dhabi newspapers said, "In the event of behavior that violates the moral codes of access to the mosque, or other visit regulations - such as taking inappropriate pictures, posing in ways that are improper in the context of sacred place, talking loudly, or eating - the violators are directed in a polite manner that reflects the civilisational and tolerant attributes of Islam. Here, the Center refers to a recent incident, involving a singer who came for a private visit to the mosque, at a gate that is not reserved for visitors, without prior coordination with the Center's management and without identifying herself."

The 25-year-old singer posted a number of snapshots on her Instagram account, which saw her dressed head-to-toe in black with bright red lips and matching nails, but fans have since hit out at the star for her "disrespectful" actions.

Items Du Jour: Rooney Scores Dior, Doutzen Pulls an Angelina

Christy Turlington+ Considering she has both the face and body for high fashion, it's no wonder that actress Rooney Mara has signed with Dior to lend her face to their Down Town fragrance campaign. Naturally, her face is so gorgeously distracting that it's barely apparent that the photo is an ad for a perfume.

+ Model Doutzen Kroes imitates Angelina Jolie's famous 2010 Oscar dress, showing off some serious leggage at the Cannes Film Festival in Atelier Versace (albeit, looking somewhat like a superhero).

+ Despite her doctor's orders to avoid tight-fitting shoes, a very pregnant Kim Kardashian was spotted desperately trying to squeeze into her Givenchy heels.

+ Harper's Bazaar features supermodel Christy Turlington on next month's cover, which notes that she's still fabulous at 44 - as if we still didn't need reminding since she turned 40.

Michelle Williams’ Native American-Inspired Cover Causes Controversy

Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Celebrities, News,

Michelle WilliamsMichelle Williams is a pro at slipping into various roles in her films, but her latest act for Another magazine has stirred some controversy.

The cover in question features the Oscar-nominated actress styled in Native American dress, looking pretty unrecognizable. The image is one of several others for the magazine's alternate covers, which include Williams as a "Kennedy-era co-ed" and another where the Oz the Great and Powerful star imitates Andy Warhol's famous Marilyn diptych.

"Just as Blackface is never okay, Redface is never okay. Stop supporting cliché images of American Indians. Racism is racism no matter what era of our history you attempt to portray, or what lens or filter you use," Jezebel writes of the image.

While it is already an unoriginal idea to photograph a star in the vein of homages to certain images or artistic styles, there are plenty of others of which to choose from that are less offensive to an ethnic group.

Kim Kardashian Blasted by PETA

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities,

Kim Kardashian in ParisKim Kardashian has been blasted by PETA for wearing snakeskin boots.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star was seen walking through the streets of Paris on Tuesday in a pair of thigh-high Christian Louboutin python boots. The fashion item sells for $5,495 and are banned in her home state of California.

A spokesperson for People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals compared her to evil Disney character Cruella de Ville. "They'd go well with a Dalmatian-fur coat, which is also illegal to sell in California and immoral to sell anywhere else,"  Wendy Wegner said.

It's not the first time the reality TV star had a run in with PETA. Kim was recently slammed in a giant billboard for wearing fox fur, which resulted in Kim being flour-bombed by a supporter during a red carpet event last March.

According to the California Penal Code Section 653o, it is unlawful to import python into California for commercial purposes, to possess with intent to sell, or sell within the state. However, it is not illegal to purchase python in another state and carry it over.

Dior Always Planned on Replacing Galliano

John GallianoFinding a new artistic director was always on the agenda for Christian Dior.

Raf Simons was appointed to the role at the fashion house last month - replacing John Galliano who was sacked in March 2011 following an anti-Semitic rant - and although Dior waited 13 months to name a new designer, during which time profits unexpectedly grew, president and chief executive Sidney Toledano said they never considered continuing without one.

"I never considered that. I always thought we absolutely needed an artistic director. They, and their charisma, are what create breakthroughs. But you make choices about how you use that. The role of artistic director for a lifestyle brand - one that implies all the aspects of life such as vacation, sports, and so on - is different from the role of artistic director in a luxury brand. [They are] a shorthand to help consumers understand the brand, and to embody it," he said.

Lady Gaga, Marc Jacobs Cover V Magazine New York Issue

Lady Gaga and Marc Jacobs on V

One thing is for sure when you book for your magazine cover: you’ll be paying for plenty of skin.

Gaga covers V Magazine this month as her version of the Statue of Liberty alongside . Dubbed the New York Issue, the “V” is written in bubblegum—naturally.

While some may be outraged at Gaga’s impersonation, I’d have to say that it’s not nearly as shocking as other issues and figures she’s tackled, on top of the fact that this is a magazine that once featured a topless Adriana Lima whose chest could be seen by scratching off the “V” letter.

Italy Deems Julianne Moore Ads Indecent

Julianne Moore for Bulgari

For a city known for its Renaissance paintings that feature plenty of women wearing little clothing in a continent that seems to wonder why many Americans fear nudity, it may come as a shock to many that Venice, Italy has banned the above Bulgari ad, starring actress from its scheduled billboard duties.

“An advertisement showing a nude woman on a divan is not appropriate for St Mark’s Square,” Mayor Giorgio Orsoni said.

While Moore may not have clothes on, the smiling, playful lion cubs seem to diffuse the expected sexual charge of the photo. That, of course, wasn’t enough for the folks who oversee what is posted around their city…
