DC Comics Review: Justice Society of America #30

We pick up from where we left off with last month’s issue with the Justice Society of America (JSA) all defeated except Stargirl and The Flash Jay Garrick.  For whatever reason, Stargirl must not be harmed.  The group of miscellaneous stand ready to take out Jay Garrick when he runs away.  He runs to go get help in the form of the new Dr. Fate.  A while back there were a series of one-shots called the Helmet of Fate as well as the mini-series Countdown to Mystery that saw the return of an all new Dr. Fate.  This Dr. Fate is a legacy character named Kent V Nelson and he is the grandnephew of the original Dr. Fate, Kent Nelson.  This was all new to me as I wasn’t aware that a new Dr. Fate was chosen.  This Dr. Fate is able to fool the villains into thinking he’s the real deal as far being able to use his powers as well as his predecessor’s. 

Fate, Stargirl, and Flash hold off the villains long enough as it gives the other JSAers enough time to recover and regroup.  The villains see that the tide has turned on them and run off.  Magog wants to run after them.  Wildcat wants to retreat as Liberty Belle is hurt and they can’t seem to contact Mister Terrific.  Power Girl agrees with Magog, but appeases Wildcat and splits the team up with some heading back to headquarters, while others head after the villains.  Magog is portrayed as being more aggressive here.  He’s looking at this from a military perspective and wants to stomp out the enemy for good.  Something doesn’t seem right with him.

DC Comics Review: Justice Society of America #27

This month’s issue of the “Justice Society of America” (JSA) is the first issue of the post-Geoff Johns era. Comic book veteran Jerry Ordway is writing and penciling a two-part story prior to the new writing team of Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges come on board in July. Many fans of this title were sad to hear the news of Geoff Johns exit and I’ve been hesitant to continue collecting this title as many times when a popular writer leaves a book, the quality of that title drops. Geoff Johns work on “Teen Titans” was great and that book hasn’t been the same since he left.

I’ve just finished reading this month’s issue and I’m happy to say that at least with what Ordway has done with this here, the quality of writing for this book has not gone down. The story finds founding JSA members Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Flash (Jay Garrick), and Wildcat along with fellow member Liberty Belle trapped within the JSA headquarters at the hands of Alan Scott’s son Obsidian.  Has Obsidian gone insane once again or is truly doing this to protect the members of the JSA.

I just finished reading “Justice Society of America” #23.  Can someone please put Geoff Johns on a new Captain Marvel comic?!

This issue focused on the Marvel villain Black Adam and the resurrection of his wife Isis.  I’ve never been a big Captain Marvel fan, but Geoff Johns does it again; he makes me interested in characters that in the past I really had no interest in reading.  It’s such a shame that he’s leaving Justice Society.  Another great issue.  Pick it up if you’re a Marvel fan. 

Tuesday Preview

Here we are again. The Tuesday Preview has hit three in a row. Couldn’t do it without you.

Some interesting books this week. In Batman 685 I am sure we will learn everything we have to know about Bats. Again, I recommend anyone trying to follow this continuity to read Bubba’s comment for a clear viewpoint on our caped hero. Justice Society of America 23 should either wrap up the Gog storyline or start another. And the biggies, Final Crisis 7 and Revelations 5 - all will be cleared up. Grant Morrison reveals all. Comic readers head for tall buildings.

On the Marvel side we start with the always great Captain America. My best book of the year soldiers on. One of my new favorites is Hercules. Here is a hero that chases every woman in every story that he appears in, but with a grin on his face. And yet he seems to succeed and, as a spill over, the 7th (or 8th) smartest man in the world seems to be getting something out of his palling around with Herc. New Avengers 19 debuts and should contain the Dark Reign Saga. The only worry is that we are going to have too many Avengers teams, but I am sure we’ll never get to 50. Wow, 50 Avengers Initiative teams and 52 DC Universes. Lots of characters huh? And In Ultimate Spider-Man 130 we may continue killing off characters from Ultimatum. Or not.

DC Comics Review: Justice Society of America #22

Holy crap was that a good issue!  This is the final part to the “One World Under Gog” storyline.  Normally I don’t have the time to write a review for things so quickly after I read them, but I had to on this one.  Geoff Johns and Alex Ross just hit a monster home run on this one.  Normally when I read comic book storylines, I’m never quite satisfied with the ending.  Sometimes the story starts off good and ends badly or the ending ends up being just okay.  Not this one, this was one of the best endings to a comic story arc I’ve read in a long while.

Geoff Johns leaving JSA

It’s been announced on various comic websites that Geoff Johns is leaving “Justice Society of America” (JSA) after issue #26.  I read this last night and was very disappointed.  I thought JSA would be a book Geoff would stay on for many more years to come - unfortunately that will not be the case.

I will probably drop JSA after Geoff leaves.  I’ve liked Geoff’s run on this title over the past two years, but I think the work he did on the previous JSA title is far more superior.  I think by the end there were just too many characters to really focus on.  What happened to Mr. America?  I’ll flip through the first issue after Geoff leaves to see what the new creative team is doing, but if it doesn’t grab me, I’m gone.

There is no one at DC right now that’s doing anything that would make me consider continuing this book if they came on after Geoff.  Maybe Paul Dini.  Right now comics are getting too expensive and with a family to support, other things have to take top priority over comics.  I’m looking forward to Geoff’s “Flash Reborn” next year and I’m interested in seeing what he does with “Superman: Origins”.  Hopefully this reboot of Superman’s origin is much better than “Birthright”; it was so boring.  Great art by Leinil Yu though.

JSA is a great book and has great characters.  I hope a writer is found who respects and loves the characters as much as Geoff does.  Many of these characters have been around for decades and I would love to see them continue to shine in the limelight for decades to come.

DC Comics Review: Justice Society of America Kingdom Come Special: Magog

This issue was written by Peter Tomasi with the art provided by Fernando Pasarin.  It’s a very good issue featuring Lance Corporal David Reid who was resurrected as Magog in the current “One World Under Gog” storyline. I liked the introduction of David Reid to the team by Geoff Johns and Alex Ross. The character is the great-grandson of President Franklin Roosevelt who was a part of the formation of the Justice Society of America (JSA). I love American history and I always love comic stories that weave real history into their storylines.

This issue has some JSA members following Gog on his “mission” to help the people of the world. The group comes across a river with dead bodies floating in it.  They discover that it has been poisoned by militants and it will kill everyone in the immediate area who use it for water if they don’t block it’s path.  The river is blocked by Gog and he and the JSA members make their way to locate the militants.

Review: DC Comics’ Justice Society of America #20

Since it began, Geoff John’s “Justice Society of America” has not been as good as his previous run on the “JSA” title.  “Justice Society of America” has been good, but not great.  Still Justice Society has been a lot better than some of the crap that’s been out there from the big two companies.

One of the reasons I think it hasn’t been as good is because the pace has been a lot slower.  Geoff has done a lot of explaining of who all of these characters are.  I enjoy character development and feel it is important to telling a good story.  However, this is a superhero comic book.  You need some action.  During the “One World, Under Gog” story arc that is currently unfolding, I believe John’s has “kicked it up a notch” to quote Emeril Lagasse.
