Boom! Goes! Kaboom!

Word GirlSo far, so good. Following the loss of its Pixar titles, Boom! Kids has rebranded itself as Kaboom! and outlined a number of its upcoming titles in a series of tease posts on the internet in the past week or so.

The curent line-up will feature Word Girl, based on the PBS animated series (newsstand readers and iPad owners will love this), a new Roger Langridge series called Snarked, a Star Wars parody (always a good bet) called Space Warped (which is a translated French series that someone will go in and rework all the French-specific jokes to tap into US nerd culture.

Best of all is a new Peanuts project that had keyboards smoking as the legion of armchair detectives tried to guess what it was: New? Reprints? Ultimate Peanuts by Mark Millar, oh please, internet, tell me!

Turns out it’s a new adaptation of a new Peanuts animated movie called Happiness Is A Warm Blanket Charlie Brown, which Warners Home video will release this month.

This tie-in graphic novel adaptation is on the script by Peantus creator Charles M. Schulz and adapted by Craig Schulz and Stephan Pastis (Pearls Before Swine!), and will feature art by Bob Scott, Vicki Scott and Ron Zorman. Heidi over at Comics Beat runs several sample pages and it looks just fine.

I’m hardly a Peanuts purist. I get a huge kick out of the early strips, but the images of the characters have been licensed so often for so many things, including as pimps for MetLife insurance, that I think any notion of the characters as “pure” is simply misguided.

Peanuts is a business, a family business, and if the family wants to stay in that business, I’m all for it.

Knowing Boom!/Kaboom’s abilities on past comics and looking at the creative team, I know the Peanuts stuff is in very good hands. I hope this leads to lots more.

The rest of the new Kaboom line-up - and other titles are sure to be announced before long - looks like fun and I can’t wait to pick up some of this stuff on the convention circuit this summer.
