Helena Bonham Carter: Christmas Makes London Friendly

Helena Bonham Carter and her family in LondonHelena Bonham Carter's favourite thing about Christmas is that it makes Londoners friendly.

The 47-year-old actress - who lives in Belsize Park in north London with her director husband Tim Burton and their two children - thinks the best thing about the festive period is that it brings festive cheer to her neighborhood.

When asked to share her favourite Christmas tradition, Helena said, "Going for a walk in the morning and seeing strangers in London break their year-long habit of unfriendliness and actually smile and say hello to one another."

The BAFTA Award winning actress - who stars in this year's highly anticipated Marks and Spencer's Christmas advert alongside supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and David Gandy - also described the signature scents of Christmas as one of her favorite things about the holidays: "All the smells - cinnamon, orange and spice."

Tim Burton Shoots Helena to Relieve Tension

Tim Burton and Helena Bonham CarterTim Burton shoots Helena Bonham Carter with a Nerf gun when he gets angry with her.

The Hollywood couple - who have two children together, Billy, nine, and five-year-old Nell - admit they have had some difficult times during their 11 year relationship, which has seen them work on a number of movies together, but they find novel ways of dealing with their issues.

"We've survived [as a couple], but it hasn't always been easy. Sweeney Todd was the worst; definitely the worst. But then I found out she was pregnant with Nell and it kind of all made sense. Alice in Wonderland was fine. Alice was good, actually. I had a Nerf gun that I'd shoot her with every so often to get my tension out," he explained.

Helena Bonham Carter Is Living with Tim

Tim Burton and Helena Bonham CarterHelena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton are living together.

The eccentric couple famously own houses next door to one another in London and live in them separately, but the pair have forced to live under one roof with their children Billy, eight, and Nell, four, while building work is being done on one property. Although they were nervous about adhering to a conventional living arrangement, the couple are finding the experience "surprisingly OK."

"It's going surprisingly OK. There's a lot to be said for being in shouting distance. And it's cozy. The kids love it," Helena said.

Despite their usually unconventional domestic set-up, Helena and Tim - who have been together since 2001 - have an established routine which sees the 46-year-old actress do the family cooking and Tim, 54, prepare the accompanying drinks, much to the delight of their daughter. "I've always done the cooking, which I love. He can warm up. He does two-minute rice. And gets the drinks ready. He makes smoothies on a weekend. Our daughter once said to him, 'Dadda, why don't you make smoothies instead of movies?'" Helena told Out.

Helena Bonham Carter is Too Lazy to Wed

Tim Burton and Helena Bonham CarterHelena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton are too "lazy" to get married. The couple - who have been together 11 years and have children Billy, eight, and four-year-old Nell - famously live in adjoining houses because they need space from one another, though the actress insists this doesn't mean their relationship isn't serious.

"We're not [married], actually. Not through any kind of ... Through laziness, really. Our houses are married. It is very good to have. You definitely need your space," she said.

Helena and Tim have worked on seven movies together and the 45-year-old actress thinks it is important that she gets to see him work otherwise she would worry about the filmmaker's stress levels and unhappiness when he came home in the evenings: "He is very stressed. Directors are. The stress level - it's a battle. I mean everything that can go wrong goes wrong. But then again, what's great about working with Tim - when you're involved with him - is that I get to see that on set, he's having fun. But if I didn't get to go on set, I'd think he was suicidal for six months. I love seeing him work. It's a really good thing. It's very healthy to do, every so often."

Helena Bonham Carter ‘Sent Off’ by Tim

Tim Burton and Helena Bonham CarterHelena Bonham Carter gets "sent off" by partner Tim Burton if he disapproves of her behavior.

The Dark Shadows actress says the filmmaker - with whom she has two children, Billy, eight, and four-year-old Nell - is obsessed with soccer and mimics the disciplinary process used in the game to reprimand her: "He's become a real soccer fanatic, so he has yellow cards and red cards. I'm always being sent off. It's pretty playful but that's good for me. We do have a laugh!" Helena - who lives in London with Tim and their kids - went on to explain she receives yellow card warnings for things such as twitching eyebrows and moving hands.

In Dark Shadows - a comedy vampire film directed by Tim - Helena plays psychotherapist Dr. Julia Hoffman and based her research for the role on her mother, who held a similar profession. However, the 45-year-old star admits she used to "resent" her parent's job because she always took a professional stance to her daughter's moods when she was younger.

When Johnny Depp ran to France to escape the paparazzi, I’m sure he never would have imagined having to leave his tranquil paradise. Unfortunately, the very private Pirates of the Caribbean star has come to face this nightmare upon Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s recent move to the beautiful country, which forced many of their die-hard paparazzo to follow suit.

Judging by recent pictures taken of the former heartthrob, I would say that it’s safe to say that he is upset at the large influx of cameras around southern France.
