Ian McKellen has praised Ellen Page for coming out.

The veteran actor - who publicly revealed he was gay in 1988 - is glad the star has been open with the world about her sexuality and thinks it will serve as encouragement for other people to see "it does get better." He told Buzzfeed, "All this has come to a happy conclusion, hasn't it? With Ellen Page ... coming out. That gladdened my heart so much. For people who are lonely... reading that about someone whose career they follow is a little bit of a help and encouragement to them to think it does get better."

Ian McKellen to Marry Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellenIan McKellen is "going to marry" Patrick Stewart. The 73-year-old actor will officiate at the ceremony between his friend and X-Men co-star and his fiancee, jazz singer Sunny Ozell, when they tie the knot in Masachusetts.

"I'm going to marry Patrick [Stewart]. I am going to officiate at his wedding. In Massachusetts, in the middle of America somewhere, you get a friend along, and I read out the words, and Sunny and Patrick will then be married," he said in a television interview.

The British actor revealed it won't be the first time he has officiated at such a service: "I've done it once before with two guys having a civil partnership. I was crying my eyes out. I wore a white gown which I bought in India. You mustn't upstage the bride."

Ian McKellen Battling Prostate Cancer

Ian McKellenIan McKellen has been battling prostate cancer for "six or seven years." The 73-year-old star often fears it "could be the end of the road" when he goes for a HIV test, but he now lives happily with the potentially life-threatening disease.

"You do gulp when you hear the news. It's like when you go for an HIV test, you go 'arghhh is this the end of the road?' They say you have cancer of the prostate and then that you can have it zapped. You can have it snipped but you are not a candidate for that. You are waitful watching," he said.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey actor revealed his is yet to receive any treatment for prostate cancer and insists it is "no big deal." He explained, "I've had it for six or seven years, when you have got it you monitor it and you have to be careful it doesn't spread. But if it is contained in the prostate it's no big deal. Many, many men die from it but it's one of the cancers that is totally treatable so I have 'waitful watching.' I am examined regularly and it's just contained, it's not spreading. I've not had any treatment."
