Ellen DeGeneres Called Transphobic After Oscars Joke

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies, Television,

Ellen DeGeneresEllen DeGeneres has been branded a "transphobic" after she made a joke at the Oscar Awards on Sunday.

The talk show host - who is openly gay - has been criticized by fans after she joked that Liza Minnelli looked like a drag queen at the glamorous event, held in Los Angeles, at the weekend. "Hello to the best Liza Minnelli impersonator I've ever seen," Ellen, who was hosting the awards, said to Liza at the ceremony before adding, "Good job, sir."

Viewers took to Twitter afterwards to hit out at Ellen for her remark. "I did not appreciate Ellen's mean joke about Liza. I found it transphobic and disrespectful [sic]," Bruce LaBruce wrote. While Greastzok tweeted, "Are we going to address the fact that ellen blatantly called liza minelli a man you'd think she would know better im extremely disappointed. i literally just sat there in disbelief when she said that i was like did she actually just say that [sic]."

However, Liza, 67, didn't appear to take offence from the joke and claims the 56-year-old comedian didn't mean "any harm" by it. "I think she thought it would be funny, but she never stopped after she said it and said 'my friend Liza Minnelli.' So I think it went a little stray on her. I don't think she meant any harm at all, and she's a wonderful lady," she told TMZ.

Jared Leto Leads Silence for Typhoon Haiyan Victims

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Music, Kind Acts,

Jared LetoJared Leto led a minute's silence at the MTV EMAs for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The rocker - whose band 30 Seconds To Mars won the award for Best Alternative act - asked for the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam to be quiet for 60 seconds in remembrance of the estimated 10,000 people killed by the devastating storm which swept across the islands on Friday.

"If we can be part of the solution rather than the problem then that's a wonderful thing and there's a terrible tragedy just affected a great number of people, many people have died, many people are displaced and they are in turmoil right now. So as we celebrate in one part of the world its completely legitimate and appropriate to send an acknowledgement their way. We're in a very fortunate situation right now and the tables can be turned very quickly."

When asked if there should be a benefit for those affected, he added, "I'm not in charge of anything, but if I had my way of course. You help if you can. Obviously we are fortunate to be here and not in some incredible giant storm that's gonna rip our houses and lives away from us. It's nice when people do that, it's solidarity."

Chelsea Handler Mocks Reese Witherspoon’s Drunken Arrest

Chelsea Handler and Reese WitherspoonChelsea Handler mocked Reese Witherspoon's drunken arrest last night.

The chat show host took the opportunity to tease her good friend as she presented the Legally Blonde actress with an award at the ELLE Women In Hollywood 2013 ceremony, joking about her infamous disorderly conduct arrest video. The footage, which leaked online in April, saw Reese verbally insult a policeman who arrested her husband Jim Toth on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) in Atlanta, Georgia.

"'Personally, as a true friend, my favorite project of hers was an overlooked short film that she made earlier this year. She plays a very inebriated housewife defending her inebriated husband ... And if you haven't seen it, you can go on YouTube," Chelsea said.

Reese took the joke well and was seen doubled over laughing in her seat as good sport Jim chuckled next to her. There were clearly no hard feelings between the pair as Reese posed next to Chelsea for a photo opportunity at the swanky banquet held at the Four Seasons hotel in Beverly Hills.

Jennifer LawrenceJennifer Lawrence and Harvey Weinstein honored Bill Clinton at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. At the ceremony in Los Angeles last night, the Silver Linings Playbook star was joined by the famed film producer as they introduced the former US president for his Advocate For Change Award.

Drew Barrymore was hosting the yearly event, which recognizes the achievements of various branches of the media who represent the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and issues important to them.

Jennifer slipped up when saying the former commander in chief's name, although the honoree was in good spirits. "I don't know why Harvey made Jennifer do that. She really was like 2-years-old when I became president. I met her backstage and she looked like she was touring the Museum of Natural History," he joked.

Elsewhere at the star-studded bash, the Stephen F. Kolzak Award was presented to Steve Warren by Leonardo DiCaprio and Charlize Theron, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower was given the prize for Outstanding Film - Wide Release.

Justin Bieber and Selena GomezSelena Gomez will not be attending the American Music Awards because her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber is performing. Justin is set to perform at the ceremony on Sunday, and Selena is not going to make an appearance at the prestigious event in Los Angeles because the pain of their recent split is just too fresh.

"Selena has never been confirmed to be at the show," a representative said. She is also not nominated for any prizes at the ceremony, unlike Justin who is up for three awards, including the highly coveted Artist of the Year accolade.

Selena and Justin were believed to have held crisis talks last weekend to discuss where their relationship was going after their split was confirmed last week. "I saw Selena go into the hotel around 5:40 pm and not even three hours later, Justin went in. I saw him leave around 11 pm. It's not just over for Justin and Selena, whatever happens they have a lot to talk about. They're both being a bit cagey and stubborn but they're desperate to see one another. This isn't new for them; they often have a tumultuous relationship. We all expect them to work it out," a source said.

The comedian presented the ceremony in Los Angeles, California and decided to "address the elephant in the room" by discussing her affair with Rupert Sanders. Look on the briight side, they're now a part of the seven dwarfs. You've got sleepy, grumpy, adultery, cheating," the 32-year-old told the audience at the Staples Center.

Corey Haim Snubbed by Movie Industry Again

Corey Feldman and Corey HaimFirst, Corey Haim was left out of the In Memoriam segment at the SAG awards. Now, he’s been snubbed by the Oscars as well. Haim’s former bestie and most frequent co-star, Corey Feldman, has stepped forward to speak out against the slight.

“Corey’s films have earned the industry over a half a billion dollars, and his work remains an inspiration to young artists world wide,” Feldman ranted to TMZ. “Corey [Haim] dedicated his life to the film industry. The same industry that failed to dedicate even 30 seconds to his memory.”

Haim's face was missing from the In Memoriam shown during the 83rd Academy Awards, and for many fans the slight stings. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released a very tepid statement in response: “Whatever the length of the sequence, there will always be fans and family members of those not included who will be disappointed by their omission. The Academy extends its understanding and its apologies to those who missed seeing a favorite face in this year’s feature.”
