Matthew McCounaugheyMatthew McConaughey came to the rescue of a baby seal.

The Oscar-winning Dallas Buyers Club star reportedly told a group of teenagers to "back off" after they began poking the animal with a stick while he was surfing on the beach in Malibu, California.

"Matthew told the kids the seal wasn't hurt, it was resting and sunning itself - and that young pups do this all the time while the mother seal's swim close by until they are ready to re-enter the sea. After a 20-minute lecture on sea life, the kids were so anxious to get away that they didn't even bother to ask the star to pose for a photo," a source told The National Enquirer.

Morrissey with a turkey

Morrissey has criticised Barack Obama over his annual Thanksgiving turkey pardon.

In an open letter posted on fan site True To You titled "Thankskilling," the singer attacks America's animal rights record, claiming that 45 million turkeys are "horrifically abused" at Thanksgiving and that the annual holiday "supports torture." The "First Of The Gang To Die" singer wrote, "Please ignore the abysmal example set by President Obama who, in the name of Thanksgiving, supports torture as 45 million birds are horrifically abused; dragged through electrified stun baths, and then have their throats slit. And President Obama laughs. Haha, so funny! Further, the meat industry is responsible for 51 per cent of human-caused greenhouse-gas emission, therefore the embarrassingly stupid White House 'turkey pardon' is open support for a viciously cruel and environmentally irresponsible industry."

Carrie UnderwoodCarrie Underwood finds being a vegetarian easy. While many vegetarians complain it is difficult to find restaurants which will will cater to their needs, Carrie says she never has a problem when eating out.

"I am 100 per cent vegetarian but I try my best to be vegan. It's getting better. There are so many restaurants that will work with you - even steakhouses. My husband [ice hockey player Mike Fisher] loves to eat meat and there's a place called King Prime that we like to go to. They're always really nice to me and give me veggies if I ask for them. There's loads of newer restaurants in [Nashville districts] East Nashville and The Gulch that will cater for you too..."

Meanwhile, despite reports Hayden Panettiere's feisty Nashville character is based on her, Carrie insists she and her other singer friends are nothing like her. "Noooo! There are so few women in country music versus the men. But the TV shows are always about them and how drama-rific it all is, how they all hit each other. I have a lot of girlfriends in the scene and none of us are like any of the characters on the show!" she explained.

Alec BaldwinAlec Baldwin is urging Americans to boycott circuses because of the way they treat elephants.

The 30 Rock actor has posted a four-minute video on YouTube which alleges the Ringling Bros. company, as well as many others, mistreat the animals and he wants people to stay away.

"Having worked with actors for many years, it's hard to believe that anyone would have to be dragged kicking and screaming into show business. But for the elephants for Ringling Bros. and other circuses, that's exactly what happens," he said in the video posted by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

He cites PETA's multi-state investigation of Ringling Bros., which includes undercover video footage of animal handlers beating elephants with metal-tipped bull hooks "just moments before they walked onstage."
