Carrie Underwood Named Top-Earning ‘American Idol’ Alumni

Carrie UnderwoodCarrie Underwood has been named the top-earning American Idol alumni.

The country music star and 2005 winner topped Forbes magazine's annual list thanks to her staggering $31 million income over the last year, with a sell-out tour, albums and beauty deals under her belt.

Kelly Clarkson, the first ever Idol winner, came in second place with $7 million with the earnings of two albums and concerts, each scoring her quarter of a million dollars. The third spot on the list is a surprise tie between season 8 winner Adam Lambert, who landed a guest role on Glee, and 2012 winner Phillip Phillips, with $5 million each. The lesser-known Phillips' winner's single "Home" fared better than any in the show's history, shifting over 4 million copies.

Chris Daughtry was third with $4 million thanks to performing over 80 shows with his eponymous rock band. Baby-faced country singer Scott McCreery ranked sixth with earnings of $3 million, while season 5 winner Taylor Hicks - who is the only Idol alumni with a Las Vegas-residency - came seventh. Broadway star Fantasia Barrino, Dancing with the Stars contestant Kellie Pickler, Smash singer-and-actress Katharine McPhee and Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson rounded out the top 10.

Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson for ‘American Idol’ Panel?

Jennifer Hudson and Kelly ClarksonFormer American Idol contestants Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson are set to return to the show as judges. Kelly - who won the first season in 2002 - and Jennifer - who placed seventh in 2004 - have been approached by producers to join the panel of the new series after they decided to replace Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban. Veteran judge Randy Jackson recently quit the show and bosses want to return to a three person format, with Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert among those who have been approached to take the final spot.

"Nothing is final yet, it's 95 per cent there. The alum panel will be Fox's attempt to reignite ratings by bringing back Idol faces that the fans care about. It's Idol stars guiding the next generation," a Fox source told E! News.

American Idol 10: Top 4 Results

The stage was set for drama on the Thursday results episode of American Idol. With lights turned low, Ryan Seacrest intoned about the importance of the vote. You see, only the Top 3 get to go home in glory, to a big hero’s welcome. The fourth-place finisher simply goes home, to wait for the Idol summer tour with the rest of the season’s rejects.

It took almost 72 million votes to determine the Thursday results. The Top 4 all scored high praise from the judges on Wednesday, each having two performances with which to impress them.

American Idol 10: Celebs Sound Off on Pia Toscano Exit

Pia Toscano eliminated - American Idol 10

Pia Toscano was so overwhelmed by her ninth-place American Idol elimination, she had to be led off stage by a medic. She’s feeling much better now… but, we can’t say the same for the celebs who have been following her on Twitter. Her early exit has sparked outrage from some of the most surprising sources.

“Don’t have an IDOL habit, but how could the USA vote Pia off?” Tom Hanks tweeted. “I may be done for the season! HANX”

“Are you watching Idol? I am shocked and so sad,” said one-season judge Ellen DeGeneres.

American Idol 10: Top 11 Results

American Idol began Thursday’s results show with an explanation of the Motown genre… though we use the word “explanation” rather loosely. More than 30 million votes were counted to bring the night’s results, which Ryan Seacrest hyped “may shock you.” For once, his words proved true. The male competitors wore black suits for results night, while the girls put on shimmering white evening wear.

As always, Idol peppered its results show with videos of behind-the-scenes action.

At the Oscars: The 83rd Annual Academy Awards

James Franco and Anne Hathaway Hosting 83rd Academy AwardsThe 83rd Academy Awards opened with a montage of the handful of movies they’ve decided to honor this year. As usual, all nominations came from a select, certain group of movies in the long list that came out during 2010. If you didn’t see The Social Network, The King’s Speech, The Fighter, Black Swan or True Grit, the Oscars wanted you to feel like they’re absolutely can’t-miss films.

But, the award show did offer more than the usual back-patting the actors give themselves once a year.

“Oh my gosh, you’re all real…this is all happening,” Anne Hathaway grinned from the stage as the smoke cleared. Her diamond-covered white gown was a perfect choice for the opening monologue, which was peppered with jokes about James Franco’s nomination and Hathaway’s lack of one (“it used to be, you get naked, you get nominated…not any more”).
