Ratings: American Idol Drops to Number Two

American Idol logoFor the first time in show history, American Idol is getting beat in the ratings war by a rival reality TV series. On Monday, March 29, approximately 23 million viewers watched . That number barely edged out the singing contest, which drew a paltry 22 million for Tuesday’s performance round.

The two shows don’t appeal to exactly the same demographic, which is why advertisements on Idol cost three times more than those on DWTS (roughly, according to Vote For the Worst calculations, Idol earns a cool $28 million per episode), but Dancing‘s sudden dominance could shake a few things up.

Is Idol a sinking ship? Or this only a minor blip in an otherwise perfect season? Stay up to date on all the news, spoilers and gossip - check out all our posts.

Paula Abdul to Helm New-Old TV Series?

Star Search Logo

UPDATE: say that Paula’s deal with ABC has failed to come to fruition. Perhaps she’ll make it to X-Factor with Simon Cowell after all!

New rumors suggest that all the old rumors are untrue: won’t be doing X-Factor after all. Gossip says that Abdul is currently in talks with ABC to host a new version of Star Search, which is being newly re-vamped for television. The series ran for 12 years (1983-95) with Ed McMahon at the helm.

Here’s the thing: Star Search has been re-vamped before. CBS did it in 2003 in an effort to compete with American Idol (the plan didn’t work). Arsenio Hall was the host, and it was canceled after only two seasons. In fact, CBS still has their official up for the series.

John Mayer’s Exes to Appear on Good Morning America

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: ABC, Gossip,

Jessica Simpson, John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston

George Stephanopoulos could have a very interesting roundtable on his hands.

Tomorrow morning on GMA, the show will welcome two names quite familiar to singer : Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson.

The two women - exes John referenced in Mayer’s recent Playboy interview - will be appearing to promote their individual projects. Simpson will talk about Monday night’s debut of The Price of Beauty, her new reality series for VH1. Meanwhile, Aniston will discuss The Bounty Hunter, her new movie with Gerard Butler.

Will these ladies have to share a green room? Will Robin Roberts be questioning them both about John? This is exactly the kind of potential awkwardness that helps get me up on a Monday morning!

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Specials, ABC, Gossip,

Jason Mesnick and Molly MalaneyHe may not be marrying the girl he originally proposed to, but that won’t keep ABC from celebrating his nuptials.

Later this spring, the network will be the venue for and Molly Malaney’s wedding. The event comes approximately five months after the two became officially engaged, and over a year after the former Bachelor publicly - and famously - broke it off with his previous fiancee, Melissa Rycroft.

ABC says this will be the “first couple to ever walk down the aisle,” Trista Rehn - a Bachelorette - had her wedding to Ryan Sutter broadcast in 2002. (Mesnick and Malaney also didn’t end their season as a couple.)

During the two-hour event, romantics will get glimpses of the pre-wedding preps including the bridal fitting and the bachelor/bachelorette parties.

The bells will ring for The Bachelor: Jason and Molly’s Wedding on March 8.

Rob Lowe Leaving Brothers & Sisters

Rob Lowe on Brothers & Sisters

He’s endured several political runs, a heart attack, an adoption, his wife’s cancer and another man, but Robert McCallister has finally had enough.

After nearly four seasons on Brothers & Sisters, has chosen to leave the program. Lowe, who was brought on early in the series to help spark ratings, simply felt being a Walker outsider wasn’t fulfilling anymore.

Rob’s decision may have come at a convenient time for the network. According to E! Online, ABC has been looking to get rid of a character to save money. So does this Robert’s marriage with Kitty won’t survive…or that the senator won’t? I’m sure we’ll find out during May sweeps.

Network TV Goes Green: Old Shows Recycled

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Action, Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, ABC, CBS, NBC, Gossip, News,

Hawaii Five-O

This doesn’t bode well for upcoming TV seasons. NBC, ABC and CBS are all following the same environmental trend: they’re recycling. However, these network TV additions won’t reduce emissions or help us in an energy crisis - if anything, it’s just going to bring down the value of network TV.

All three networks will be re-hashing the 1970s by bringing back The Rockford Files (NBC), Charlie’s Angels (ABC) and Hawaii Five-O (CBS). They’re following a current trend in Hollywood, where everything old is new again. Even Betty White is experiencing a somewhat renewed popularity.

This opens the door for all sorts of other 1970s shows. Someone, somewhere, is getting ready to re-pitch Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo and Feather and the Father Gang.
