Apple Set To Update iMac Line In August?

Santa Rosa iMac

It’s been almost three years since the iMac has enjoyed a redesign, when it went from the old-school lamp stand look to the current “monitor with chin” enclosure. Well, the rumor mill is churning again, this time with speculation that will be updating the with another new look by August. The expectation is that the design will feature a 2-inch thick aluminum enclosure, which would make it look similar to the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. Furthermore, it is believed that the 17-inch iMac will go the way of the dodo, as Apple looks to release the newer model in 20- and 24-inch sizes only. Lastly, it would only make sense that these models get a bit more horsepower under the hood as well - that should come by way of Santa Rosa processors at speeds up to 2.4 GHz, as well as 1.3 megapixel iSight cameras. We know, August can’t come fast enough.

Noise-box IBM compatible user for 3 decades, soon to be newbie iMac owner.

First of all, I like the current milky design. I’m not sure I would like the aluminum design half as much.

However, I would like a Mac that is not limited to 3GB of ram. I would like a better gfx board option. I would like more processor umpf, but I’m not ready to pay through my nose for the Xeon. How come Apple has ignored the intel E6XXX cpu lineup?

Another thing is sound: Where is my 7.1 audio?

Sorry for asking stupid PC owner q’s, but these are concerns when you are living on the other side.

There are no stupid PC owner questions!  But, unfortunately I don’t know this answer.  Anyone?

Just to clarify things:

I’m not suggesting that the iMac should be using the E6XXX CPUs. I get it - that would give problems with both size and cooling.

What I am suggesting is that there is a wide gap between the power in an exit-level iMac and that of an entry-level Mac Pro. The same is true in price (when considering the display).

There is a missing link in the Mac lineup:
I want a single processor box with Dual-Core - not the Dual Xeon overkill.
I want a GeForce 8800 series gfx board - not the Quadro overkill.
I want normal inexpensive DDR2 RAM - not the Xeon ECC overkill.

Why?
Because I used to be a 3D artist in the game industry, and I still like to play with my very expensive software. Yet I have to pay for the party myself, and I’m not making money from my computer anymore.

The lack of sound board options on the Mac is still just puzzling. Apple were always big on audio - what happened?

Best to you all…
