Fame and the Top Four Mix on American Idol

American Idol Top 4

Performance night for the top four on began with host Ryan Seacrest announcing the “competition is closer than ever before.” The same could be said of every episode every week, sure, but it was a good enough intro for the evening.

The theme: songs from the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. This gave contestants a wide umbrella to show off their personalities, their style and their potential to take the coveted crown: the title of American Idol. These days, the prize is little more than the title itself. The remaining contestants all stand a great chance of getting recording contracts no matter what. But, the show must go on.

“Song selection is everything,” reminded. With such a wide range to choose from, his words were only too true.

American Idol to Celebrate Fame

fans have found themselves in this position before. A final four competition comprised of three men and one woman. One’s a rocker, another is a diva and two more have huge fan support. Will Idol history repeat itself? Is this the last week we’ll see the season’s resident rocker, David Cook?

Not if FOX can help it. Tonight the theme will be songs from the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, a wide umbrella of tunes which will no doubt give Cook the opportunity to shine in his chosen genre. It was in the fourth-place position that rocker and seeming shoe-in for the title was eliminated. But does that mean Cook will follow his footsteps?

Even if he did, that certainly wouldn’t be too bad. Daughtry now enjoys huge success with his famous band and probably isn’t at all displeased with how it all turned out. By this time Thursday, Idol will narrow the field down to only three. Will this year’s rocker have more longevity than others from seasons past?

American Idol: A Possible Paula Elmination?

Paula Abdul

Brooke White may have said her good-byes on Wednesday’s , but her elimination is still eclipsed by one that’s only been hinted at and suggested: the possible elimination of judge Paula Abdul.

Abdul’s Tuesday mix-up has already become the stuff of Idol legend (and a highly popular Internet video clip), the thing that will be talked about for many seasons to come. Many of the fans and public have been calling for ‘s head after she mistakenly critiqued Jason Castro’s second performance when he’d only sung a single song on the evening.

Tuesday Night Treats: Hell’s Kitchen Premiere

Gordon Ramsay

As Idol ended and began, I realized that Tuesday night just became my favorite evening for TV. Two saucy Brits, two great hours of entertainment. With Gordon Ramsay now following Simon Cowell, we have just been treated to one of the better programming ploys FOX has ever tried. But was the Hell’s Kitchen premiere worth all the hype?

promised viewers, during another American Idol commercial break, that the first ten minutes of Hell’s Kitchen would be a can’t-miss event. I think that might have been a little strong, considering much of the first few minutes of the show were swamped by clips of Gordon Ramsay screaming at contestants from last season and this upcoming season. Don’t get me wrong - I love listening to Ramsay scream, but you’re not going to blow my mind with two minutes of edited promo footage. Finally, it was time to get to the meat of the premiere.

Hell’s Kitchen: The First Fifteen

Hell's Kitchen - Gordon RamsayFor the fourth season of , the stakes are higher, the competition is tougher, and the big news of the season premiere is that world-class chef Gordon Ramsay will get literally sick when sampling one of the dishes.

This year’s competition features fifteen would-be chefs, instead of twelve, fresh blood that’s been added possibly because this year’s prize is the biggest one yet. The winner of Hell’s Kitchen this season won’t get to go work in any high-class restaurant…they’ll be going to work in one of Ramsay’s own high-class restaurants. So, who are these lucky (or not so lucky) cooks?

Chris Cornell Reacts to American Idol Song Choice

David Cook - Billie Jean

rock-n-roller David Cook sang his way into the Top 9, but in the doing may have upset some Chris Cornell fans.

Cook played Cornell’s version of the Michael Jackson classic “Billie Jean” during , earning him high praise from judges. But the Chris Cornell fans weren’t so pleased. After Cook’s performance, all three Idol judges praised his creativity. Randy Jackson called him “original” and “bold,” Paula Abdul said he was “brilliant,” and even Simon Cowell found it “brave” and “amazing.” Here’s the rub: there wasn’t anything original in either the arrangement of the song, or the way Cook sang it.
