The battle for Wednesday night’s 10:00 hour is proving to be an interesting one. Last week, the debut of Law & Order: Los Angeles bested The Defenders in both the viewers and the demos. This week, Defenders took the viewers, while NBC’s program won the demos. What will happen in Week 3? Place your bets now.

• Survivor: Nicaragua (11.8 million, 3.6/11 in 18-49) sent 400,000 home.
• The Middle (8 million, 2.4/8) lost 300,000.
• Better with You (6.9 million, 2.3/7) was off slightly.
• Undercovers (6.4 million, 1.5/4) gave up 800,000.
• Hell’s Kitchen (6.6 million, 3.1/9) served 500,000 more.
• America’s Next Top Model (2.8 million, 1.3/4) did about the same.

• How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8 p.m.):  “When Ted turns down Barney’s offer for a building-design job, Barney tries to woo him with all of the seduction methods he uses on women.” This episode will launch the next chapter of the series: “How I Met Your Other Dad.”
• Gossip Girl (CW, 8 p.m.):  “Dan is once again conflicted about his feelings for both Serena and Vanessa.” And once again, I’m conflicted as to why I’m still recording this show.
• House (FOX, 8 p.m.):  “House and Cuddy go on a double date with Wilson and his girlfriend, Sam (Cynthia Watros).” House figured a night out on him could finally settle the whole “Your Girlfriend Was on the Bus Because of Me” awkwardness.

Wednesday Ratings: Solid Debut for New L&O

Another Wednesday night meant another double-win for CBS. The network, with help from Criminal Minds and Survivor, took both the viewers and the demos. CBS did see a loss, though, in the 10:00 hour. That’s when Law & Order: Los Angeles defeated The Defenders in the time slot.

8pm

• Survivor: Nicaragua (12.2 million, 3.5/11 in 18-49) snuffed out 300,000.
• The Middle (8.3 million, 2.4/8) shed 500,000.
• Undercovers (7.2 million, 1.6/5) lost 1.4 million.
• Better with You (7 million, 2.2/7) gave up 1 million.
• Hell’s Kitchen (6.1 million, 2.9/9) declined by 500,000.
• America’s Next Top Model (2.9 million, 1.3/4) added on 100,000.

Wednesday Ratings: Modern Family’s Welcome Return

ABC didn’t win the night, but it had what the 18-49s wanted to watch: Modern Family. The Emmy-award winning comedy returned last night to its best demos to date. Unfortunately, that half hour wasn’t enough for the network. CBS wound up taking wins in both the viewers and the demos.

8pm

• Survivor: Nicaragua (12.5 million, 4.0/12 in 18-49) easily won its hour.
• The Middle (2.6/8) had 8.8 million laughing.
• Approximately 8.6 million (2.0/6) checked out the debut of Undercovers.
• Better with You (8 million, 2.5/7) retained most Middle‘s numbers.
• A new installment of Hell’s Kitchen (2.9/8) fired up 6.6 million.
• America’s Next Top Model (1.3/4) turned in 2.8 million.

Season premieres: Castle, Chase, Chuck, Dancing with the Stars, The Event, Hawaii Five-0, House, How I Met Your Mother, Lone Star, Mike & Molly, Rachael Ray, Rules of Engagement, Two and a Half Men

• How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8 p.m.):  “In the sixth season opener, Ted runs into Cindy (Rachel Bilson), whom he dated briefly—and who is also the roommate of his future wife.” He heard from a little bird (a.k.a. Twitter) that she wasn’t with Hayden Christensen anymore.
• Chuck (NBC, 8 p.m.):  “Season 4 opens with Chuck engaging in a sweeping quest to find his mother (Linda Hamilton), all while keeping the rogue mission a secret from his sister.” The only clue he has to work with is the fading Polaroid picture John Conner gave him.
• Two and a Half Men (CBS, 9 p.m.):  “In the eighth-season opener, Charlie this it’s time to cut back on his drinking.” His judge He also thinks it would be smart to film a PSA.

Tuesday Ratings: FOX was Hot, NCIS was Hotter

It took a two-hour Hell’s Kitchen finale to finally put a dent into CBS’ strong Tuesday night lineup. The FOX series helped the network win in the demos last night, even though NCIS broke the 20 million mark (again) in viewers yesterday. The reality show also managed to improve 19% from its recent May finale.

8pm

• NCIS (20.4 million, 4.5/12 in 18-49) had the best numbers all around.
• The Biggest Loser (3.4/9) weighed in at 9 million viewers.
• Approximately 8 million watched Dave Levey win the sixth season of Hell’s Kitchen (3.8/10).
• Shark Tank (1.6/4) ate 5.4 million up.
• 90210 (1.1/3) turned in 2.4 million.

Tuesday Ratings: Huge Turnout for NCIS Block

Some things simply get better with age. After six years on CBS, NCIS returned strong for its seventh. Last night’s premiere had its largest numbers to date. That impressive performance - followed by two solid debuts - gave the network wins in both the viewers and the demos.

8pm

• NCIS (20 million, 4.6/13 in 18-49) was up 2.3 million from last September.
• Dancing with the Stars 9 (15.2 million, 3.5/9) was off 3 million from one year ago.
• The Biggest Loser (7.5 million, 3.1/8) was down 2.2 million from the previous Tuesday.
• Hell’s Kitchen (3.2/9) fired up 6.8 million.
• 90210 (2.2 million, 1.1/3) slid by 200,000.

• The Closer (TNT, 9pm):  “Brenda reopens a murder case when it’s surmised that a father may have offered a false confession to cover for his schizophrenic son. Sosie Bacon (daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick) guest stars.” Thanks to the Bernie Madoff scam, the whole Bacon family is now being put to work.
• Jon & Kate Plus 8 (TLC, 9pm):  “Jon stays home to oversee kitchen renovations while Kate and the kids head to the beach as the series returns with its first all-new episode after a five-week hiatus spurred by a marital breakup.” The show will be followed by a new series: Jon Plus His 8 Dates.
• Making His Band (MTV, 10pm):  “The finalists move into their new pad and tensions arise between the trained musicians and those who were self-taught.” There are some who are born talented, there are some who are taught. Then there are those who buy record companies and call themselves singers.
• Weeds (Showtime, 10pm):  “Coworkers Celia and Dean develop a new marketing scheme after discovering they have a surplus of product.” Who knew one had to create a need for weed?

• The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm):  “Amy tries to devise a way to tag along with Ben on his trip.” She eventually settles in for listening in with the baby monitor.”
• The Closer (TNT, 9pm):  “Numerous mysteries spin around a high-profile shoot-out that left two cops and a teen boy dead. Enter Force Investigation Division bigwig Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), whose merciless snooping upends Brenda’s investigation.” Brenda better watch out—this one stands with fist!
• Dating in the Dark (ABC, 10pm):  Series premiere. “In the opener of a dating reality show in which contestants meet and get acquainted in a completely dark room, the contestants are given an article of clothing belonging to one of their dates.” Thankfully, Ed Hardy t-shirts can’t be seen with the lights off.
• Obsessed (A&E, 10pm):  “A woman with a fear of the weight of objects and the harm they could cause.” This is often referred to as the “I Hate Working Out Syndrome.”
