The 59th Annual Primetime Emmys: In Review

EmmyIt was an evening of firsts at the 59th annual primetime Emmys. The first time the awards show was on . The first time Ryan Seacrest (resident FOX golden boy) hosted. The first time green concerns were proudly touted. And the first time I didn’t laugh at the Emmy host – not even once. FOX unabashedly promoted their own stars and shows all night long, though there were precious few wins for the network. Brian and Stewie from Family Guy provided some animated laughs, Lewis Black ranted and raved and performed a bit in the middle of the whole thing, and I found myself largely confused throughout the three hour-plus broadcast. Toward the end, Seacrest actually walked out on stage in a Henry VIII costume and told a gay joke – I couldn’t make this up if I tried, this actually happened. TV’s elite looked on in a mixture of horror and worry. Seacrest, unsurprisingly, acted and spoke exactly as he does while on American Idol. The strange, round stage provoked a lot of funny comments, and for a rare awards show change it was the acceptance speeches that became the saving grace of the FOX broadcast.

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Coverage

Emmy AwardsThe 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast.  Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)?  Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)?  Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?

What a difference a year makes.  Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now).  Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best ComedyLast year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien.  This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest.  Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama.  This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).

I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight.  We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…

Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!

Former Apprentice Winner, E! Newser Tie the Knot

Bill Rancic and Giuliana DePandiIt’s the wedding of the year! Well, maybe not so much… but it’s an interesting television union, nonetheless. Bill Rancic, who won the very first season of The Apprentice (remember that? when it was good?) and E! News co-anchor Giuliana DePandi got hitched over the weekend. The nuptials were held in Italy in a Catholic ceremony that was conducted in English and Italian. Rancic’s priest from Chicago was even on hand to conduct the ceremony. While Chelsea Handler of E!‘s Chelsea Lately was one of the 180 guests, there were no Ryan Seacrest sightings (maybe he was too busy working one of his many jobs?)... and Donald Trump, although invited, was not present. The couple met when DePandi interviewed Rancic in 2004, but didn’t start dating until 2006. His proposal in December was typical—if you consider being asked in a helicopter ride over Chicago typical. Since both are used to life in front of the cameras, naturally they captured the details of their wedding in a show for the Style Network, called Marry Me in Capri. The show airs October 23rd. The honeymoon is on hold because DePandi has to get back to work—covering the Emmys, and Rancic is set to host iVillage’s “In the Loop.”

Ryan Seacrest Gets Another Job

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, FOX, American Idol,

Ryan SeacrestGood grief. Is this going to be a daily occurence? I’m talking about another announcement that Ryan Seacrest will be hosting yet another show. This comes, literally, on the heels of the announcement that he’ll be taking on hosting duties for this year’s Super Bowl. His next gig? Oh, a little show called The Emmys. Of course, I suppose it’s a better fit pairing him with a television awards show than it is putting him with football. While Emmy hosts traditionally are folks that can bring the funny and inject a bit of personality into the proceedings, I’m not sure Seacrest has what it takes. Sure, he knows how to stretch out an American Idol broadcast and he can banter with sourpuss Simon Cowell, but does he have the necessary excitement to bring to the Emmys? Heck, is there any show this guy can’t host? I guess we’ll be finding out soon enough when he takes on both Super Bowl and Emmy duties.

Ryan Seacrest Lands Super Bowl Job

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Sports, FOX,

Ryan Seacrest Naturally, when you think of the Super Bowl, you think of… Ryan Seacrest? Well, I’m not so sure that’s a match made in heaven, but it does fulfill Seacrest’s dream of becoming the hardest working man in Hollywood. That’s got to be his dream—otherwise he’s just got a lot of bills to pay off or something. No worries though, he won’t be doing any sportscasting, rather he’ll serve as entertainment host. Huh? Since when does the Super Bowl need a play-by-play of the entertainment climate? David Hill, chairman of Fox Sports Television Group said, “The Super Bowl has grown to become a landmark holiday on the American calendar, attracting not only the sports world, but the biggest stars in music and entertainment. Naturally, we’d like our broadcast to reflect that growth, so we’ve expanded our pregame lineup beyond the realm of sports.” So, Seacrest will be working the pregame red carpet (if that’s what you want to call it), interviewing the celebs and introducing pregame entertainment. Seacrest, naturally, is “thrilled about joining the absolute best sports broadcast team in the world.” Can’t you see the dollar signs in his eyes?

Idol Wannabe Goes Into Labor During Audition

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, FOX,

American Idol And you thought that Beyonce going on with the show after she recently fell down a flight of stairs while singing was impressive… one of the hopefuls for American Idol went into labor during the audition process. It happened during Tuesday’s Dallas tryout, where Antoria Gillon started having contractions during her audition in front of the producers. Seems that since waiting in line since 2 a.m. the night before, Gillon wasn’t going to let anything stand in her way. She said, “I kept singing. One of the judges gave me her seat! I told her I had been there all day, and nothing was going to stop me from singing. I hadn’t been there all day for nothing!” This has got to be one of the truest cases of “the show must go on.” The happy ending is two part—first, Gillon was taken to a nearby hospital, where she delivered a baby boy; second, she got the coveted “golden ticket” to go to the next round. Of course, this Idol first had many wondering what she named the new baby—Simon, perhaps? Nope, but she did give a shout out to the talent competition by naming him Jamil LaBarron Idol McCowan. Now that’s some delivery story!

Kim Kardashian Comes to E!

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable,

Kim KardashianOut with the old… in with the new. In what can only be considered the lesser of two evils, socialite will be taking over the E! reality show throne now that Paris and Nicole’s show got the axe.  Often seen with pal Paris, Kardashian—who makes headlines for her booty and sex tape—seems like a natural pick for the uninspired reality programming on E! I mean, have you seen Sunset Tan—ugh. On the upside though, I do on occasion watch The Girls Next Door, if only to figure out how the whole Hugh-Hefner-relationship-with-three-women works. The Kardashian show is not yet titled, but is being billed as a family-oriented program, which will be executive-produced by . The show will take a peek at Kardashian’s life as a boutique owner—who knew—and her relationships with sisters Khloe and Kourtney and half-sisters Kendall and Kylie. Mom Kris and step-dad Bruce Jenner will also be along for the ride. According to Seacrest, “At the heart of the series—despite the cat fights and endless sarcasm—is a family that truly loves and supports one another. The familiar dynamics of this family make them one Hollywood bunch that is sure to entertain.” If you say so. This joins the upcoming reality show on E! featuring Snoop Dogg.

Auditions Begin this Summer for Idol

American Idol Wow, could it be time for American Idol auditions already? Seems like we just put that whole Sanjaya hair talk behind us and were moving on. Last season of Idol was tough on me. I used to really enjoy watching it, but this past season? Well, Idol, I don’t think I love you anymore. It’s not that I don’t like you… I think you’re great and everything, but this year dragged on and I felt… trapped. Yep, that’s it. I felt like I had to keep watching you—you, with your smug host and snarky Brit judge, the kookoo lady that broke her nose, and the king of the Dog Pound. I hoped it would get better, but it didn’t. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get over you, but I’m going to try. I wish we could just take a long break from each other, but I heard that you’re looking for new talent for the next round. I need time for my wounds to heal, but you’re right back at it. When the dust settles, I hope we can still be friends. Sigh…. Okay, so I got a little tired of Idol last season—tell me I’m the only one! And today I just read that Fox has announced audition dates/locations for the next season, which will air in January 2008. Auditions kick off on July 30 in San Diego, then they hit the road and check out the talent in: Dallas, TX; Omaha, NE; Atlanta, GA; Charleston, SC; Miami, FL and Philadelphia, PA. Those auditioning must be between the ages of 16 and 28. Good luck!
