The Worst American Idol Season Ever?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol,

American Idol 6 Finalists It became such a phenomenon. It made all the other networks jealous. It locked up the number 1 ratings spot for so long. It re-launched the careers of some has-beens, and started brand-new careers for some that might never-have-been otherwise. Eventually, it all had to go to hell…right? This year’s season of is leaving a lot of fans wanting. Bad singing makes for exciting reality TV watching but painful reality listening, and many fans are left confused at the end of each Idol results show. Last night’s elimination of Gina Glockson seems to prove that singing isn’t what makes an American Idol. The only thing more painful than Gina’s teary good-bye (as she sadly sang her song of hope, encouraging all to smile though her heart was breaking) was the quick filler performance used to cover Tony Bennett’s absence from the stage. So many ears were bleeding, many were unable to hear Gina’s later singing. America gets to vote for who they like – but it’s the judges that decide who’s going to be around when voting commences. With so many poor singers now filling the stage, some fans are calling season 6 the worst ever in Idol history. As these less-talented singers stick in season 6 longer than those with more powerful pipes, one question keeps coming up: WHY? Maybe the truth is, America doesn’t want good singing. They want good TV. And watching performers fall flat…well, that’s better than a high-speed chase.

Sanjaya Offered KFC for Bowl Hair

Sanjaya MalakarOK, let me start by saying that I really don’t want to add to the discussions about American Idol‘s Sanjaya Malakar and his ever-changing hairstyles. But by golly, I can’t pass this one up. KFC President Gregg Dedrick wrote Sanjaya an open letter that said, in part, “If you don a bowl hairdo during one of your next nationally televised performances, KFC will grant you a free lifetime supply of KFC Famous Bowls.  We’re sure America will be as ‘bowled-over’ by your take on this classic look as they are by our KFC Famous Bowls.” Ugh. Seriously? I don’t know what’s more ridiculous—a bowl hairdo or a lifetime supply of KFC Famous Bowls. At least this KFC guy threw in something a little more significant: “If you sport a bowl cut, KFC will cut a check in your name to Colonel’s Scholars, a charity providing young people with much needed college scholarships.” It’s unlikely that Sanjaya will bite at this offer, but if we see him with a bowl cut on an upcoming performance, now you’ll know why.

Idol Voting Makes Tonight A Toss Up

American Idol 6 finalists No one could have predicted that Chris Sligh would find himself without enough votes to go on, but nothing has been more shocking to American Idol watchers than the perseverance of Sanjaya Malakar. During last night’s performance, Simon Cowell stated that he was going to try a different tactic with the popular contestant, and instead of bashing the kid’s pipes (as he’s routinely done), called the performance “incredible” in a voice filled with sarcasm. The favorite badboy judge of American Idol has publicly stated he will be tempted to leave the show if Malakar wins, a far-fetched idea that seems less impossible all the time. His changing hair styles, his growing showmanship, and his obviously female-oriented fan base could keep Sanjaya safe tonight. Meanwhile, Hayley Scarnato is sticking to her strategy of form-fitting clothing that shows off her best assets – none of which have anything to do with singing. When America votes for the contestants they like to look at, instead of the ones they want to hear, anyone could be going home later tonight.

Fox’s Wedding Bells Meets its Demise

Teri PoloI don’t want to be a naysayer here, but Wedding Bells, the latest drama/comedy from David E. Kelley, seemed doomed to begin with. After just seven episodes, production has shut down, so it looks to be a done deal for the show. This show never really had much of a chance, with a shaky premise and some time slot shuffles. The show starred Teri Polo, KaDee Strickland and Sarah Jones as sisters running a wedding planning business. It had a great premiere following American Idol, then was scuttled off to the darkest recesses of Friday nights, where ratings steadily declined. “While we’ve been pleased with the show creatively, and David’s writing was first-rate, the show just didn’t secure the ratings we’d hoped for,” Fox said in a statement. Looks like the honeymoon’s over. Sorry, had to be said.

ABC Comedy ‘Underbelly’ Delayed

ABC Logo Seems the news that American Idol will extend its results shows has hurt the premiere date of a new ABC comedy, Notes From the Underbelly. The pregnancy sitcom was supposed to begin on April 11th at 9:30 p.m., which would have cleared it from any Idol interference—until they announced that Idol would begin having longer results shows on April 11th. So, Notes from the Underbelly has been bumped to Thursdays, starting April 12, with two back-to-back episodes at 10:00 p.m. Who knows if anyone will tune in that late for a fluff comedy, but the show will get the boost of viewers who may stick around after Grey’s Anatomy. For now, that displaces Men in Trees—no word on when that will return, but if Underbelly sinks, you can bet Men in Trees will be back in its old time slot.

Idol Extends Results Shows

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, FOX, American Idol,

American Idol Ugh. Just when I was beginning to enjoy the rapid pace of the half hour American Idol results shows, they’ve gone and changed things up. Beginning April 11th, the Wednesday shows will run an hour and continue that way through May. Now, wouldn’t you think that as the pool of contestants gets smaller, the need for an hour-long show is less necessary too? Ah, no one knows needless filler like American Idol—more dramatic Seacrest pauses, more Ryan/Simon insults, more cheesy group performances. The change apparently comes at the producers’ request, since the eliminated contestants haven’t had enough time to give their final performances. Again though, as the final numbers dwindle, there should be more than enough time to get in that last song.

American Idol Goes Long to Compete With ‘Dancing’

American Idol logo American Idol, in an effort to steal Dancing with the Stars’ thunder, will add seven minutes to Tuesday’s show. How does this impact Dancing? Idol will potentially pull viewers from the first seven minutes of Dancing with the Stars—pretty sneaky, huh. Why go to these lengths? Is it to better showcase the Top 10 and guest Gwen Stefani? Or just a nanny-nanny-boo-boo move? I’m sure they need those extra seven minutes because typically these Tuesday night shows have been running two hours. And that’s just too dang much! We’ll have to see how ratings fare because both shows are immensely popular right now. House, by the way, will follow Idol at 9:08. I know that’s screwy, but as an Idol watcher (can’t say fan, really), those two hour shows are brutal!
