Trump Vodka—So Smooth.
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Apprentice, The - Donald, News,
As if Trump water were not a strange enough branding opportunity, Donald Trump has now turned to alcohol. Introducing Trump Vodka—now we wait and see how it will tie in to an upcoming challenge on The Apprentice. Before that happens though, the first case will be delivered to a red carpet affair at Kennedy Airport in New York, complete with porters in tuxedos. Ironically enough, Trump doesn’t drink alcohol… is it just me, or does Trump seem bored? Eh, nothing else to do, so why not slap my name on vodka? Patrick Kenny of Drinks America Holdings Limited (huh?) said “there’s nobody who markets better in the luxury category than Donald Trump.” What next? Luxury Trump Toilet Tissue? Ah, don’t you just love luxury products? The going price for a one-liter bottle of Trump Vodka is $30. Look for it in liquor stores everywhere.

Paris and Nicole Together Again?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, News, Rumors,
Just in case her nightclub brawl with Shanna Moakler didn’t thrust her into the spotlight enough, Paris Hilton is yet again making news with a possible reconciliation with ex-best bud Nicole Richie. The once inseparable The Simple Life co-stars had a break-up of sorts that drove a wedge between them, even impacting their most recent season of The Simple Life, where they were never in the same place at the same time.
E! Online is reporting that the two appear to have ended their 18 month spat—they arrived together for dinner at a West Hollywood restaurant on Sunday night, had a sleepover and endured the snapping of the paparazzi to commemorate their get-together. “We are back!” they said before they drove away. Oh goodie. I know you were all so worried about when they would reconcile. We can all sleep better now. Okay, I’m done with the cynicism now.

Mr. T Gives Out Advice in New Show
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
It’s funny to think that the persona that is Mr. T will still be identifiable in 2006—for those of us who grew up on the A-Team and Mr. T’s cartoon (remember that?), we get it. But, what about people who have no idea what “I pity the fool” even means? Mr. T’s new show, called I Pity the Fool (genius, right?), has the T-man taking it to the real world to give out his solid advice and motivate people with his flavor of self-help. Just “teaching fools some basic rules,” as he says. The show will be airing on TV Land beginning on Wednesday at 10:00 p.m., but you can catch the first episode on Yahoo. The episode, “Motivation”, has Mr. T helping out a car salesman who works for his father-in-law. I admit, it does have a fair amount of entertainment value, but I wonder how much help and motivation he can instill. At least he’s going without his many chains, but the yell factor is still there… at any rate, bring on the T!

The Knights of Postponement
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Dancing With The Stars,
What’s worse—being postponed or put on hiatus? Hoping to prevent the latter, ABC has already decided to delay the debut of their new comedy, The Knights of Prosperity. The comedy, about a working-class group trying to rob Mick Jagger, was originally slated to start on Tuesday, Oct. 17th. ABC hopes that by rescheduling, they will be able to give it the proper promotional attention it deserves.
The sitcom, starring Donal Logue, will initially be replaced by an extended version of Dancing With the Stars. Starting Nov. 28th, the 9pm time slot will then be occupied by Big Day—a romantic comedy about the adventures leading up to a wedding. Day will star Marla Sokoloff, formerly of ABC’s The Practice. No word yet when Knights will be put back into the network’s rotation.

Shanna Moakler Punched Paris?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Cable, Dancing With The Stars, Cable/Satellite, News,
God forbid Paris Hilton should stay out of the headlines for even one day. The latest is an accusation by Paris that Shanna Moakler punched her at a Hollywood nightclub. The incident was said to have occurred early on Wednesday, according to police and Hilton’s publicist. Moakler’s side of the story is a little different: she said that Hilton’s ex, Stavros Niarchos, hurt her by bending her wrists and pushing her down stairs—this is according to Moakler’s publicist. Anyone else exhausted about this whole situation? Both filed police reports about their individual battery attacks, with Hilton saying that Moakler “used the most vile language” then punched her in the jaw. Moakler, former MTV reality star and Dancing With the Stars reject said she and Hilton “exchanged profanities,” then Niarchos threatened to hurt her. The police are investigating the incident and will speak with witnesses at the club to get the story. Girls, if this is all over Travis Barker, you need help.

Latest Reality Show Features a Look at Monastery Life
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
TLC’s latest entry into the reality ring had me skeptical at the first mention. But after reading the synopses for the reality show The Monastery, I think this could be an interesting show. The Monastery will premiere on October 22nd and will show how living the monastic life can change five men’s lives. TLC General Manager David Abraham had this to say about the series: “The Monastery is a social, spiritual and learning experiment in which people experience the intensity of monastic life. The purpose is to expose people to the reality of unplugging from modern life completely and creating the opportunity to explore their lives in a contemplative environment.”
This strikes me as an interesting concept, if only to have a contrast to the reality shows (I’m thinking Real World) where contestants show up to some pimped out house to live their “reality” for a few months. The Monastery takes all of the material items out of the picture and gets people stripped down to a more simplistic way of living.

The Week Ahead in TV
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, FOX, NBC, The CW, Lost, The Bachelor,
MONDAY
The Bachelor (9pm on ABC): Are you seriously telling me that an Italian prince needs to find love on a reality show? Flavor Flav must make it look appealing.
TUESDAY
Friday Night Lights (8pm on NBC): Men everywhere will welcome programming that counters Dancing with the Stars and Gilmore Girls.
Veronica Mars (9pm on CW): Strangely enough, I haven’t yet watched the show that takes my name. But it shouldn’t surprise me that people think it’s so good.
WEDNESDAY
Lost (9pm on ABC): I’m gonna make a prediction and say Walt’s never coming back. Otherwise, the producers will eventually have to explain why he’s gained more weight than Hurley.
The Nine (10pm on ABC): First a plane crash mystery, now a secret amongst hostages. I’m not sure I can take all this uncertainty on the hump day.
FRIDAY
Trading Spouses (9pm on Fox): If the Bachelor saw this show, he might rethink the whole American wife thing.

Amazing Race Renewed for Another Season
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Amazing Race, The, Renewals,
CBS has renewed The Amazing Race for an 11th go-around. And why not? The show has won four Best Reality Competition Emmy awards and deserves even more awards (with the exception of that crummy family edition). The show is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, with the amazingly fun Phil Keoghan serving as host. The show has hit some amazing locales and featured a lot of memorable team members since it all began in 2001. The ratings continue to be good for this reality show too—the premiere on September 17th drew more than 10.1 million people. The premise never gets stale, sending contestants around the world in search of clues as they compete in a variety of strength, endurance, intellectual and gross-out challenges. The option of two choices per road block and the ability to yield other teams or fast forward are all exciting elements of the game. Contestants keep their eyes on the $1 million grand prize—testing their teamwork along the way.

Singer Jewel to Co-Host Nashville Star
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
The fifth season of USA’s Nashville Star will begin on January 11th, with Jewel taking on co-hosting duties. Nashville Star is the country-fied version of American Idol, searching for the next best country singer. Cowboy Troy returns as co-host, and I have to honestly say that I have no idea who that even is. At least they have a big name like Jewel to bring in more viewers. Jewel is rising to the co-hosting challenge, saying “I grew up on a ranch in Alaska, and my favorite memories are of sitting around a campfire with my father and listening to the songs he wrote and sang. It was pure country music, and it has made me a sincere fan of country music ever since.” At least she’s reminiscing about growing up in Alaska, and not about living in a van (as the tale goes, that’s how she spent the early days of her career). Her latest album, “Goodbye Alice in Wonderland” came out in May. The winner of Nashville Star will get a recording contract.

Anna Nicole Smith’s son, Daniel Smith, died unexpectedly on September 10th—just three days after Anna Nicole gave birth to a baby girl. The cause of death was under investigation, and finally the culprit has been identified as methadone. Toxicology tests revealed that the combination of methadone and antidepressants led to Daniel’s death. The toxicology screening was the second attempt at identifying the cause, this time with a privately hired pathologist. The combination of drugs sped up Smith’s heart, leading to his death. The pathologist did not believe his death was a suicide, rather “a tragic, accidental drug-related death.” Methadone is often prescribed as a painkiller, but is also commonly used to help heroin addicts fight their addiction.
In other Anna Nicole news, her attorney, Howard K. Stern, is claiming to be her newborn’s father. This admission came during his interview with CNN’s Larry King Tuesday night.
