Bravo Documentary Follows Paula Abdul

Hmmm. Has Bravo run out of original programming ideas? The network announced that it will be airing a documentary series titled Hey Paula, following 44 year-old Paula Abdul at her various jobs and peeking at her personal life. I say “jobs” because, not only is she working on the latest season of American Idol, but she is developing a perfume and cosmetics line, working to expand her jewelery line, and preparing to film Bratz: The Movie. This will be her first involvement with a film, taking the popular Bratz toy line and converting it to a live-action movie. Bravo President Lauren Zalaznick said of the new series, “It fits the Bravo mandate to show what’s going on in the culture of the moment.” Zalaznick also said that Hey Paula will show “an intimate glimpse at the real woman behind the headlines.” Keep an eye out for Hey Paula later this year.

‘Queer Eye’ Canceled After Fifth Season
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Bravo, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Cancellations,
Four years ago, a team of very hip and stylish gay men took to the airwaves on Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Dubbed the “Fab Five,” they helped many a straight male find their fashion sense, learn how to properly apply all matter of hair and face products, cook meals, and entertain. With five seasons under their fabulous belts, Bravo is finally saying good-by to Queer Eye. The series’ final 10-episode season will air this summer. Frances Berwick, Bravo’s VP of programming and production, announced the final season, saying “We proudly watched as viewers embraced the series that really helped open the closet doors on gays and their presence on television and in popular culture.” So, we bid adieu to Carson Kressley, Kyan Douglas, Thom Filicia, Ted Allen, and Jai Rodriguez. Don’t worry though, it’s not the last you’ll see of the guys—each seems to have some project in the works.

Midwest Town Worried About ‘Armed & Famous’ Celebs
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS,
Has anyone else checked out the latest reality show entry, Armed & Famous? Nah, me neither—and it has some folks in the town where it takes place a bit concerned. If you’re not familiar with it, Armed & Famous gives some B-list celebrities guns and minimal police training, then lets them hit the streets of Muncie, IN to enforce the law. While they are accompanied by real police offers, residents of the town are worried that the show will tarnish their reputation. And who wouldn’t be worried? The celebrities include Erik Estrada (who came the closest of the other celebs when he played a cop on CHiPs), La Toya Jackson, Jack Osbourne, wrestler Trish Stratus, and Jackass star “Wee Man.” The show hasn’t received much love from critics either, with New York Post critic Linda Stasi saying, “Maybe they should have called it Armed & Stupid.” The highlight for Stasi was when the stars had to be hit with a 50,000 volt Taser stungun. Hmmm, maybe they should make a reality show out tasering celebs.

Road Rules 2007 Promises Viewer Interaction
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Internet,
The latest installment of MTV’s Road Rules not only marks the return of the show since being on hiatus in 2004, it also introduces an interactive element. Dubbed Viewers Revenge, this edition of Road Rules lets viewers have some control over the cast. The show will not be pre-recorded as in past seasons, but rather use a “near real-time” format, similar to Big Brother. The other difference from past seasons is that the cast will compete in challenges based in California, rather than traveling on a road trip, due to the new format.
The challenge begins with six previous Road Rules’ contestants: Abram (Road Rules South Seas), Adam (Road Rules 10: The Quest), Shane (Road Rules Campus Crawl), Kina (Road Rules Xtreme), Susie (Road Rules Australia), and Veronica (Road Rules Semester at Sea). After each week’s mission, the cast will nominate a male and female castmate for elimination. Viewers will make the decision about who will compete in a face-off that is shown on the roadrules.mtv.com website. Viewers will also vote a challenger for the face-off from an online roster called “The Pit Crew.” Each Pit Crew member will have videos, blogs, and other other background information. If the Pit Crew member wins the challenge, they return to the RV and the loser then joins the Pit Crew lineup, where they can potentially get back in the game. If the initial Road Ruler wins, they keep their spot in the RV. Confused yet?
Look for a Road Rules: Viewers Revenge special on January 23rd at 10 p.m. The new season starts on January 30th at 9 p.m.

Next ‘Real World’ in Sydney, Australia
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Hold on to your hats folks, the 19th (yes, 19!) season of MTV’s The Real World will take place in Sydney, Australia. Production is set to begin next month, with the show airing on MTV next summer. So, does location impact casting decisions? From what I can tell, the producers are looking for conflict and drunkenness—all of the makings of great reality television. Real World executive producer, Jon Murray, said of the new locale, “If there was ever a people on this planet that have something in common with Real World [cast members] it’s Australians. Both [groups] love to party.” Oh, goody. Forgive me for sounding like a prude, but the drunken state of the cast is what has turned me off from this show. Although, I suppose I’ve outgrown the demographic that this behavior attracts. And what of the ‘real world’ home they will live in? Just like in the real world, they will be living in a 20,000-square-foot, waterfront house somewhere in the vicinity of the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. According to Murray, bars “are right around the corner.”

Grease: You’re the One That I Want is a Ratings Winner
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, American Idol, Desperate Housewives, Ratings,
So, I could say the great ratings for NBC’s American Idol rip-off, Grease: You’re the One That I Want, surprises me. I mean, the show seems to really copy the formula of Idol—but hey, that’s what worked for Idol, so why shouldn’t it work here? And work, it did. The ratings were fantastic, as the show averaged 11.6 million viewers. Mainly viewed by young women and teenage girls, the debut proved that people are interested in just about any type of talent competition that the networks can throw at us. Americans love to root for their favorite, and this show has viewers voting the finalists all the way to the lead roles in a new Broadway production of Grease. The ratings were so stupendous, in fact, that the show earned NBC’s highest non-sports ratings for 18-49 year-olds during that timeslot since January 2004. It was also the highest rated show of the evening for women 18-34 and teenage girls, ages 12-17. Desperate Housewives came in and took a bite of the viewers, but Grease held on to its teenage demographic.

The Apprentice L.A. Recap: Martin “The Philosopher” First To Be Fired
Posted by Monica Edwards Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Apprentice, The - Donald, Editorial,
The Apprentice LA, with it’s new format of awarding the winning team the luxury of making a lush mansion their home, and forcing the losing team to “rough” it out in tents on the green grass in the backyard of said mansion brings an interesting and new competitive twist to the show in its sixth season with Donald Trump at it’s helm. Along with the changes in habitats based on winners and losers, the winning teams’ project manager will continue to be the P.M. for that team until they lose a task—smart move by Mr. Trump, allowing him to weed out the weak from the group by keeping the strongest players in the running as long as they stay up to par.

Chef Ramsay Brings “Kitchen Nightmares” to Fox
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, BBC, FOX,
For those of you who can’t get enough of Hell’s Kitchen chef Gordon Ramsay, he’s cooking up (sorry, couldn’t resist) a whole new hellish reality kitchen show. This time around, Ramsay is developing a show called Kitchen Nightmares for Fox, the same network that brought you Hell’s Kitchen. In this unscripted series, Ramsay visits failing restaurants and gives them his brand of tough love by getting the eateries back on track. This show proves to be a full-scale restaurant makeover—from waitstaff, to chefs—and all in one week. The show begins production in February, and actually has been a successful show for BBC and BBC America.
Never fear though. Hell’s Kitchen will begin production later this month for its third season. You can expect it to air on Fox in the spring.

“Grease” Reality Competition to Feature Newton-John
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, NBC,
Okay, so Grease: You’re the One that I Want doesn’t immediately sound like a hit. But what if they raised the stakes with the promise that Olivia Newton-John, who starred as Sandy in the film Grease, would be on hand to dole out the complements and criticisms. Hmmm, the show now sounds slightly more interesting to me. And she ought to know what flies and doesn’t in this talent competition—the film was the most successful movie musical of all time, with the soundtrack being the most successful musical soundtrack.
Newton-John, who went on to earn multiple Grammy awards and star in other films, will guest star on the first two episodes of the talent show. Like American Idol, Grease: You’re the One that I Want will be looking to America to choose the most talented “Sandy” and “Danny” for the Broadway revival of Grease. The show will begin airing on Sunday, January 7th at 8:00 p.m.
