On Gear Live: Samsung S95C: The OLED TV You Can’t Afford (to Ignore!)

Lost, Josh Holloway I’ve been reading too much doom-and-gloom about the falling ratings that Lost has been experiencing. Many are predicting that the series won’t last much longer because less people are watching these days. I would love to know why people aren’t tuning in anymore. Is it the sheer frustration that some questions get answered while creating new questions… with still so many unsolved mysteries? To me, that just keeps me tuning in for more. There’s a lot of confusing information, but it’s heading somewhere. And don’t viewers want to be there in the end, when all of the information we’ve been presented with clicks into place?

This latest article, posted on Yahoo, predicts that Lost may be “killed off before its time.” Marc Berman, a TV analyst for Media Week Online, says that “Lost is the tragedy of the season.” He adds that ABC “really prematurely put the nail in the coffin. It’s too late to save it.” Ratings have gone from over 20 million in the beginning, to just 12.8 million for this week’s show. That is a significant drop, to be sure… but come on, there are so many sub-par shows out there that keep getting renewed. Are we to believe that viewership for these shows is stellar, or is Lost just too dang expensive to keep producing if the ratings don’t support it? Berman is predicting that the show will be back for one more season, but doesn’t expect it to go beyond that. Other reasons for the slip in ratings—the new 10:00 p.m. time, without a strong lead-in, and the break between “mini-seasons” that caused the series to lose momentum.

Lost Can you believe it? Lost viewership is actually down—are people tired of the show, tired of the two months of waiting, or just plain tired from the new 10:00 p.m. timeslot? The debut show last Wednesday brought in 14.7 million viewers, but that’s a drop from the 2 million the show averaged during the first half of the season. The series did win the ages 18-49 demographic, but overall, CSI: NY won the timeslot. One thing is for sure, had Lost been up against American Idol, it would likely not have done as well in the ratings. No word on how ratings were for the lead-in special that recapped Lost. This latest retelling brought perspective from series’ creators/producers and was a good refresher given the long hiatus from the first half of the season.

Lost If you’ve felt a void in your life for a couple of months, you’re about to feel whole again. That’s right, Lost returns this week—and get ready for a no-repeat ride all the way until the season finale. Season three of Lost had a huge split, in an effort to produce two chunks of the show, without reruns. To cushion the loss, ABC brought us Day Break, which was promptly canceled after just a handful of episodes. So we sat. And waited. And read our fill of Lost rumors and goodies online. And here we are—finally, February has arrived and we are ready to get this ball rolling again. While the loss was tough, and many were disappointed by the “mini-season” approach, fans of the series can now be assured that their beloved island drama is back and won’t lose any momentum until the season closes. Don’t miss it—this go around, Lost will air 16 new episodes on Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m.

Golden Globe  Ladies and Gents – I can’t tell you how excited I am about the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards tonight!!  It’s been a whole five months since I’ve done minute-by-minute coverage of an awards show and I’ve been dying to unload.  (And yes—I am ignoring the fact that the People’s Choice Awards even exist).

The Academy Awards may get the largest viewing audience, but the Golden Globes telecast is the only one I really love to watch.  A cross between the insignificant People’s Choice and the stuffy Oscars, this show mixes credibility with spontaneous fun.  Yes—the Miss Golden Globe tradition is beyond lame.  And yes—separating Dramas from Musicals/Comedies is something I will never understand.  But knowing that I may see a star slam down a drink after bitterly losing is exciting defined.

As for who I think should win?  Well, Jennifer Hudson is an absolute given.  (Though Rinko Kikuchi from Babel would be a nice surprise).  And it would be great to see Forest Whitaker beat out both Leo nominations.  But no matter what happens, I’m ready for the ride.  So bring it on!

Lost The big buzz at the Television Critics Association press tour was the announcement by Lost producers that they are considering when to end the series. Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, show producers, informed their audience that they were in discussions with ABC about when to call it quits on the popular series. They agreed that ending on a high note and doing the show for “as long as it’s good” are priorities. Lindelof also said, “Somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 to 100 episodes was going to be a version of Lost where we never had to do the bad season, the stall season, where we had to back off the story we wanted to tell. Season one is the introduction, season two is the hatch, season three is the Others, I don’t want to tell you what season four is going to be, and then there’s a wrap-up season.” This latest news is sure to have fans in an uproar, but honestly, how long can it go on? And how long would you want it to drag on, just for the sake of filling airtime? But when will it officially end? No word about that, but the show will have hit 93 episodes by the end of next season—with Lindelof adding, “and I imagine that would be very close to where it would end ideally.”

Lost Bad news for those of us who have an early bedtime. Starting in February, when Lost returns, it will be moving from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The move could potentially assist ABC with the difficulty it has had finding a show that retains a significant audience with Lost as the lead-in. By moving Lost to 10 p.m., the network can lead with a block of comedy and increase viewership with the 10:00 slot. Beginning on January 3rd, According to Jim will air at 8:00 and 8:30 p.m., followed by two new series, The Knights of Prosperity and In Case of Emergency. On January 24th, the night will lead with George Lopez, then According to Jim, Knights, and Emergency. The move also takes Lost out of competition with American Idol (which begins January 17th) and Criminal Minds (that just won the post-Super Bowl airing). It will be interesting to see how the comedy block ABC has lined up will fare against the tough competition. Lost returns on February 7th.

Lost OK folks, now that Lost is on hiatus for 13 weeks, it’s time to curl up in the fetal position and wait for the series to return in February. Never fear… ABC will be spoon-feeding small morsels of the hit show to fans during these long cold weeks of darkness. Day Break, starring Taye Diggs, will be taking the place of Lost, but viewers of Day Break should be on the lookout for what ABC is calling “Lost Moments.” These 30-second clips will show scenes from upcoming episodes and just may reveal, in small bites, what’s ahead for 2007. Of course, ABC won’t reveal what time the clips will be aired during Day Break, thus encouraging viewers to tune in for this new Groundhog’s Day-esque drama. If you don’t happen to watch Day Break, ABC will include the promos on ABC.com the next day.

Josh HollowaySo, being killed off on Lost is not out of the realm of possibility—apparently, actors on the show are fearing for their characters’ lives on the show. According to Josh Holloway, who plays Sawyer on the show, with secret scripts, none of the actors know when their time will be up. Holloway recently told Men’s Journal magazine, “Everybody in the cast worries about being killed off, and we wouldn’t know until they handed us the script three days before shooting.” He continued by saying, “It’s a sensitive issue. People have houses here, kids in school. Most of us aren’t in our twenties anymore.” Sudden character kill-offs are not a new notion on the show, but most would consider Holloway is safe for now. His con-man character is a definite hit with fans, as they wonder how the Kate-Jack-Sawyer love triangle will turn out. Best advice to Holloway—keep your shirt off as much as possible and Sawyer will continue to live on!

Friday Night Lights  MONDAY
The Bachelor (9pm on ABC):  Are you seriously telling me that an Italian prince needs to find love on a reality show?  Flavor Flav must make it look appealing.

TUESDAY
Friday Night Lights (8pm on NBC):  Men everywhere will welcome programming that counters Dancing with the Stars and Gilmore Girls.
Veronica Mars (9pm on CW):  Strangely enough, I haven’t yet watched the show that takes my name.  But it shouldn’t surprise me that people think it’s so good.

WEDNESDAY
Lost (9pm on ABC):  I’m gonna make a prediction and say Walt’s never coming back.  Otherwise, the producers will eventually have to explain why he’s gained more weight than Hurley.
The Nine (10pm on ABC):  First a plane crash mystery, now a secret amongst hostages.  I’m not sure I can take all this uncertainty on the hump day.

FRIDAY
Trading Spouses (9pm on Fox):  If the Bachelor saw this show, he might rethink the whole American wife thing.
