Bleeding Edge TV 189: Driving Tips from GM’s Milford Proving Grounds

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Gizmatic, Short Bytes, Design, Features, Podcasts, Transportation, Videocasts,
When General Motors contacted us about bringing us up to their Proving Grounds in Milford, MI, we jumped at the chance at getting to visit what we figured would be an awesome place. We were right - General Motors’ Milford Proving Grounds was the industry’s first dedicated automobile testing facility when it opened in 1924. It covers 4,000 acres, and over 4,800 staff work in its 107 buildings today. The proving ground includes the equivalent of 132 mi of highway-quality roads for vehicle testing. Some roads are open only to drivers who have passed special performance driving training.
We got a first-hand look at the new StabiliTrak technology that GM will be making a standard feature on all their vehicles in a couple of years, which aims to give drivers a lot more stability during sudden turns and avoidance maneuvers. In addition, GM gives us some tips on how to maintain control of your vehicle, even in extreme (and often unsafe) conditions. Check out the video for all the goods, and leave us any driving tips you may have in the comments.

Following on the heels of their highly successful iPhone Guided Tour videos, Apple has just posted a new Leopard Guided Tour. This one has a nice white background, a welcome change from the black background/black iPhone/guy in black shirt videos we’ve been seeing recently. The Guided Tour goes through and demos all the major features that we will all be able to enjoy in just one week when Leopard launches on October 26. The video is about 28 minutes long, and is available in small, medium, and large streaming formats as well as download format for both iPod and Apple TV.

Drew Carey to Narrate Online Documentaries

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Editorial, Internet, Videos,
Another celeb opts for online recognition. Drew Carey is teaming up with reason tv, a site where you can upload, share, and suggest videos that will be made into future documentaries. Subjects will include commuting in traffic, drug laws, immigration and “stupid big government in general,” said Carey. His first endeavor, “Gridlock: Hell on Wheels” debuted yesterday. The Reason Foundation and its monthly mag, Reason, is concerned with public policy research and undoubtedly has reasoned that having an online spokesperson can result in more attention and additional funding.
(Thanks, Chris)

Halo 2 Zanzibar map done up LEGO style

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Culture, First Person Shooters, Microsoft, Xbox,
See, it’s stuff like this that absolutely blows us away. We’ve seen a lot of people do some interesting things with LEGOs in the past, but we think this recreation of the Zanzibar map from Halo 2 may take the cake. This was done by a college student who seemingly had way too much time on his hands.
After nearly two years of building and thousands of dollars sunk into my project, it’s finished. This is my latest video which details how I made my famous Lego model of Zanzibar from it’s very first stage, to the now near completed form. I wanted to make this video so that everyone will get the facts straight. I originally sent the picture and video files that you’ll see in this video to Bungie Studios where they incorporated them into the Halo 3 Legendary edition bonus disk.
Check the video for the full scoop, and prepare to be amazed.
Super Mario 64 beaten in 6:47 with only one star

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Adventure, Culture, Nintendo,
Now this is something any hardcore gamer would enjoy, we think. A couple of guys got together to figure out how to use Mario’s awesome jumping skills to beat Super Mario 64 in under 7 minutes. While you may watch it in awe of the lightning-quick hand-eye coordination of the person behind the controller, this is actually a tool-assisted speed run. What they did was run the game in an emulator with slow speeds, and went frame-by-frame looking for exactly what to do to accomplish what they did. It is totally not meant to show off gaming skill, but rather, a game pushed to it’s limit. What you end up with is a run through the game with Mario collecting just one star, and using a glitch that allowed the character to pass through a couple of doors without the need for stars or a key. Definitely an interesting look at what can be done with a game using tools the designers never intended their game to run on.

The good news is that the show is back this Monday, with limited commercial interruptions thanks to Nissan. While we won’t be getting a super-sized two-hour premiere, we are still looking forward to seeing what doom looms over the cast this time around. NBC gives us a glimpse at the new season in the video above - join the hype and check it out.
The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards

Before this evening’s festivities begin, the producers of the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards should really thank the scandal-plagued artists who’ve unintentionally thrown publicity their way.  Tonight, we’ll be thinking about those performers who’ve canceled because they need to be in rehab (Amy Winehouse) and closely watching those who should probably go back (Britney Spears).

We’d been warning you for weeks that this would be a one-time only telecast, but in case you forgot—we hope this helps. And for those who live on the West Coast (like me), you can play along and read our coverage as if it were in real-time:

Bert and Ernie Represent Spike and Mike?

We now know that even big corporations make
We now know that even big corporations make intentional
mistakes. Someone found this image attached to the NetFlix offering for “Spike and Mikes’s Twisted Festival of Animation: Contagious.” We have seen some of the pair’s animation, which features mostly r-rated cartoons such as “No Neck Joe” by the Power Puff Girls’ creator Craig McCracken. About the closest it gets to Sesame Street is its naughty Happy Tree Friends. The error has since been corrected, but it certainly makes you wonder why it wasn’t discovered when it was originally posted.
