SciVee is Internet Science Fair

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech, Science,
If you missed out on your high school science fair and feel someone still owes you, you can now offer up your project on SciVee, a site that opened up this past weekend. Post papers and videos and be critiqued by your peers. There are also drop-down windows for data, references, comments, and a rating system. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and SDSC’s Supercomputer Center, it will only consist of those who have been published by the Public Library of Science to begin with, but will expand to include others when the idea catches momentum.

PlayStation Store Gets an Update Including Super Puzzle Fighter II

Posted by Paul Hamilton Categories: Downloadable Content, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Network,

The PlayStation Store has some new content, possibly due to the flood of PS3 owners hitting the service looking for their Warhawk download. Among the other new items are Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for $9.99 (comparable with the Xbox Live Arcade download of the same game made available last week) and Tekken 5 online add-on for $9.99 or the whole game and add-on for $29.99.
Sony is also putting up some new demos for NASCAR 08, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 and All-Pro Football 2K8 plus additional videos and trailers. Warhawk is available from the PlayStation Store for $39.99 or as a retail box which includes a bluetooth headset for $59.99.

Only One Chance To Watch MTV’s VMAs

I’m honestly not sure if anyone cares anymore—because I know I stopped a long time ago—but don’t say I didn’t warn you…
Unlike recent years when you could catch a rerun of the MTV Video Music Awards for weeks on end (usually following an episode of Sweet Sixteen), the cable channel has finally smartened up and made it a more exclusive event. Why cheapen a show by milking it to death? Then again, this is coming from a network that has already cheapened it’s image thanks to the mere presence of Next and (
insert the name of any other MTV show here).
So in hopes of bringing back the audience that has disappeared during the show’s premiere time slot, the channel will air 2007’s telecast one time only. In other words, they are basically following the lead of every other high-profile awards program (e.g. The Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes) that forces people to gather in large numbers at one time. Additionally, the network is promising to revamp the telecast overall and has even brought on uber-producer Timbaland to be the evening’s musical director. Now if they can promise me that Britney Spears will make the rumored surprise appearance (and does a trash-tastic performance at that)—I’ll be there. Better yet, I hope she cancels unexpectedly.
Take note: The Moon Men will be handed out on September 9th from the Palms Casino in Las Vegas.

Killzone 2 Footage Shows the First-Person Cover System

Posted by Paul Hamilton Categories: First Person Shooters, PlayStation 3, Sony, Trailers,
New footage of a developer demo for Killzone 2 showcases, in addition to the very grey but attractive graphics, the ‘Lean and Peek’ cover mechanic. Essentially it works like the cover system in games like Rainbow Six Vegas or Gears of War, but doesn’t compromise the first-person perspective to do so. It maps the left shoulder button to the cover snap (like hitting ‘A’ in Gears) but pulls low cover up to cover about half the screen and still allows for blind fire as well as snap-up firing. With high cover you use the analog stick to lean out and take your shots. Check out the video above for the full scoop.
New Devil May Cry 4 Trailer

Posted by Steve Van Neil Categories: Action, CAPCOM, Fighting, PC, PlayStation 3, Trailers, Xbox 360,
Capcom has just released a new trailer for its highly anticipated action game sequel. The clip runs about two minutes and contains no actual gameplay footage. Strangely, it does show cinematic footage of our hero Dante getting thrown, punched, and kicked in the face over and over again in what appears to be a training exercise. Devil May Cry 4 hits next year, with this and lots of other bits of weirdness, on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

New Spore Videos From Leipzig

Posted by Paul Hamilton Categories: Electronic Arts, PC, Simulation, Trailers,
New trailers showing some of the refinements made to Spore, the upcoming game from Sim City creator Will Wright, over the last year shows some excellent progress. As ambitious as Wright’s games tend to be, this one seems incredibly rich as you expand from a single-celled organism into a galaxy-spanning spacefarer. The developers ring up an interesting point that most games are about destroying things while this (and other Wright games) are more about building or creating. Of course you can fight with other tribes in Spore, once you get to that point, and take over other planets and the like, but perhaps it’s different to attack if it’s all in the name of progress. A second trailer is also available, showing more gameplay and the creature editing - check that one out by clicking through the jump.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Gameplay Showcases Shooting

Posted by Paul Hamilton Categories: First Person Shooters, Nintendo, Trailers, Wii,
GameTrailers.com has footage of the gameplay from upcoming Wii game Metroid Prime 3: Corruption showcasing some of the heavier shooting action compared to previous Prime games. This is apparently a conscious decision by developer Retro Studios. Talking to EGM in their September issue, Senior Producer Bryan Walker said, “In the first two games, we never really concentrated on the shooting. The Wii controller allows the combat to be better, more intuitive, and I feel we could incorporate more of that into the game.”
Metroid Prime 3 is scheduled to be released on August 27.
New Killzone 2 Footage

Posted by Steve Van Neil Categories: First Person Shooters, PlayStation 3, Sony,

Are we approaching that infamous target video yet? Over at the BBC, Guerrilla developers showed off a little more of their flagship PS3 shooter, Killzone 2. The video, linked below, showcases the game’s impressive physics and lighting systems. Also on display is the complete lack of in-game HUD. All in all, it’s a nice little taste that makes the wait for the game, due sometime next year, that much harder to bear.
