MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.0 released

If you picked up one of the new MacBook Air notebooks that Apple released recently, you'll wanna fire up Software Update to pull down the EFI Firmware Update 2.0. It fixes an issue where the Air boots or wakes to a black screen or becomes unresponsive. We're sure it's rare, but we think we speak for everyone when we say that we'd rather something like that not happen at all, so take care of that update, okay?

Apple's smallest notebook is the MacBook Air, and all signs are pointing to this being the best-selling Mac this holiday season, so we had to include it in our 2010 Holiday Gift Guide. The 11-inch MacBook Air packs in speedy flash memory that is soldered directly onto the motherboard, resulting is lightning-fast performance. It also means no moving parts, so you get five hours of battery life from the tiny little wonder, and it even sports a full-sized keyboard, which we feel is a must (and is one of our main complaints with other netbooks.) The price starts at $999 from Apple, but hey, if you go with Amazon then its $994 with free shipping, and MacMall has them starting at $969--not bad for the most portable Mac out there.

Acer reveals Iconia dual-screen laptop, Clear.fi cloud sharing service

Acer had a media event in New York where they introduced some new items and services. First, they showed their latest laptop / tablet duo, the Iconia, which boosts two screens, and no keyboard. The touch screen takes the place of the keyboard and can display a variety of touch interfaces, including a virtual keyboard, similar to what Toshiba already did in the past. Inside you'll find an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of memory and an Intel HD graphics card. The new laptop also comes with a fairly interesting media system that's gesture based.
Most of the news event however was Acer joining the large number of companies embracing the cloud, and showing off their Clear.fi content sharing system which they originally introduced earlier this year. The platform, which the company claims is "more than an App Store" will be pre-loaded on all their future systems. Both free and paid content will be available and it wiill apparently focus on audio and video content, as well as apps from partners, since there's no word of an SDK for developers. The new Clear.fi platform will debut next month in Europe.
