Acer Chromebook: Chrome OS, 11.6-inch display, $349
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Google, Internet, PC / Laptop

We've got another Chromebook to cover today, as the Acer Chromebook was announced this morning at Google I/O 2011, in addition to the Samsung Series 5 model. This one is smaller, with an 11.6-inch display, Intel Atom N570 processor, 16 GB SSD, two USB ports, HDMI, and a battery that lasts for 6.5 hours. Google promises an 8-second boot time on these as well. The Acer model seems to be the budget line, as these are going to sell for $349 for the Wi-Fi model (if you want worldwide 3G, those cost a bit more.) Look for these on June 15th at Amazon and Best Buy.

Acer tablet to use AMD C-50 APU
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Handhelds, PC / Laptop

Acer let us know earlier that its new 10.1-inch Windows 7 tablet is going to use AMD, but left us hanging as far as exact specifications go. Now, from the looks of a new DigiTimes article, it’s looking like Acer’s tablet is going to use AMD’s dual-core C-50 Ontario APU (accelerated processing unit). This APU exploits a built-in Radeon HD 6250 graphics chip and uses 9W of power. Furthermore, the tablet is reportedly sporting Tegra 2, WiFi, and 3G capabilities. Of course, none of this is officially confirmed, so stay keep your eye on the blogs.

Acer reveals Iconia dual-screen laptop, Clear.fi cloud sharing service
Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Corporate News, Internet, PC / Laptop

Acer had a media event in New York where they introduced some new items and services. First, they showed their latest laptop / tablet duo, the Iconia, which boosts two screens, and no keyboard. The touch screen takes the place of the keyboard and can display a variety of touch interfaces, including a virtual keyboard, similar to what Toshiba already did in the past. Inside you'll find an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of memory and an Intel HD graphics card. The new laptop also comes with a fairly interesting media system that's gesture based.
Most of the news event however was Acer joining the large number of companies embracing the cloud, and showing off their Clear.fi content sharing system which they originally introduced earlier this year. The platform, which the company claims is "more than an App Store" will be pre-loaded on all their future systems. Both free and paid content will be available and it wiill apparently focus on audio and video content, as well as apps from partners, since there's no word of an SDK for developers. The new Clear.fi platform will debut next month in Europe.

Several Chrome OS notebooks coming for the holidays
Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Google, PC / Laptop, Rumors

DigiTimes yesterday reported that several vendors have plans to bring Google's Chrome OS to some of their devices as early as this holiday season. Sources say that Google will have its own branded Chrome notebook by the end of this month, with HP and Acer following in December. It's apparently an attempt by the device makers to test the waters. Chrome OS is Google's way to make a device that's more web centric, with little to no on-board applications, and all your data residing in the cloud.
It's worth noting that Google is now playing in this field with two different operating systems: Android and Chrome OS. With Android being an obvious success in the smartphone market, and coming out on many tablets these days, I for one am skeptical as to the marketshare a device based on Chrome OS can gather.
