MySpace’s Tila Tequila Gets Own Show
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Reality, MTV, Cable/Satellite,
I’ve admittedly not kept up with dusty MySpace account, and now I’m not sure if I’m hip enough to return.
MTV—once again proving they’re the place to turn to for quality programming—will be introducing another dating/reality show this fall. The ingenious twist? This time around male and female contestants will be competing to date the same person: Tila Tequila. For those oblivious (like I was) to this internet celebrity, the bisexual beauty is apparently ‘the most popular girl in the history of MySpace’. Should I now feel sad that she’s not one of my ‘friends’?
Once her show A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila debuts on October 9th, Tila will work on becoming the most popular girl on MTV as well. Take note, Lauren Conrad!

Britney Spears Staging a Comeback
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, MTV, Gossip,
Justin Timberlake brought SexyBack, but can Brit bring herself back from the tabloid nightmare she has fallen into? Britney Spears has released a new single called Gimme More - a catchy tune that’s burning up radio waves. The song opens with Britney’s voice, rife with attitude: “It’s Britney, bitch” – but don’t worry, it does get a little better from there. Spears will also be performing at the MTV VMAs this year, a stage she once made famous when she exchanged a sultry, mid-song kiss with pop Queen Madonna (whose crown will never truly be taken, all kisses and pop princesses aside).

Only One Chance To Watch MTV’s VMAs
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Music, Specials, Cable, MTV,
I’m honestly not sure if anyone cares anymore—because I know I stopped a long time ago—but don’t say I didn’t warn you…
Unlike recent years when you could catch a rerun of the MTV Video Music Awards for weeks on end (usually following an episode of Sweet Sixteen), the cable channel has finally smartened up and made it a more exclusive event. Why cheapen a show by milking it to death? Then again, this is coming from a network that has already cheapened it’s image thanks to the mere presence of Next and (
insert the name of any other MTV show here).
So in hopes of bringing back the audience that has disappeared during the show’s premiere time slot, the channel will air 2007’s telecast one time only. In other words, they are basically following the lead of every other high-profile awards program (e.g. The Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes) that forces people to gather in large numbers at one time. Additionally, the network is promising to revamp the telecast overall and has even brought on uber-producer Timbaland to be the evening’s musical director. Now if they can promise me that Britney Spears will make the rumored surprise appearance (and does a trash-tastic performance at that)—I’ll be there. Better yet, I hope she cancels unexpectedly.
Take note: The Moon Men will be handed out on September 9th from the Palms Casino in Las Vegas.

MTV to Invest $500 Million in Games Division
Posted by Steve Van Neil Categories: Corporate News, Culture, Music,
Look no further for proof that the video game business is big business indeed. Media giant MTV has announced that it is sinking over a half billion dollars into the video game industry over the next two years.
“As we take our brands narrow and deep to serve our targeted, niche audiences, we’re putting well over $500 million behind building our games business across all of the brands in our portfolio,” explained MTV chairman and chief executive Judy McGrath.
MTV is set to make a big splash this fall when Rock Band is released. MTV/Viacom recently purchased Rock Band and Guitar Hero developer Harmonix, so the success of the game will greatly impact any of the network’s future gaming endeavors. In addition to the Harmonix acquisition, MTV/Viacom has snapped up Xfire and GameTrailers, quietly making itself a major player in the gaming scene.

Big Names Attached to VMAs
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, Reality, Specials, MTV, Gossip,
Each year, the VMAs honor the artists that give us the most appealing music videos – somehow, the artists who get the nods are also top sellers. Beyonce and Justin Timberlake cleared seven nominations each, and both are up for video of the year. MTV’s glitzy awards show always features live music, celebrity interviews, and plenty of moon man statues. Beyonce got the video of the year nod for “Irreplaceable,” while Timberlake’s “What Goes Around…Comes Around” and “D.A.N.C.E.” both grabbed a spot in this best-of-the-best category. Amy Winehouse was nominated for “Rehab,” Rihanna for “Umbrella,” and Kanye West will compete with “Stronger” for video of the year.

Reality Recap - The Best & Worst of June
Posted by David L. Williams Categories: Reality, ABC, FOX, HBO, MTV, NBC, Hell’s Kitchen, So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef, Editorial, Features,
Now that we’ve said goodbye to June and its 30 days of weddings, trips to the beach, and the slow, crippling realization that it’s still a long, long time until Lost comes back, why don’t we take a few minutes and look back at the best and worst of June reality TV? Nope, that was a rhetorical question. Yes, I know, there are lots of reasons not to look back, and yet I’m going to do it anyway.
Oh, and it doesn’t really fit here because it’s not a reality show, but Flight of the Conchords on HBO is pretty hilarious. I don’t really have enough to say about it to write a full column, obviously, but it’s definitely worth checking out. Okay, here we go…

Summer Reality Part 3: Everything’s Coming Up Roses
Posted by David L. Williams Categories: Prime Time, Reality, MTV, Hell’s Kitchen, Top Chef, Editorial, Features,
Having been so negative for a few weeks, I thought I would take this week to be all about accentuating the positive, being a gigantic cheerleader for summer reality shows. Like Poison so sagely warned us, though, all of these roses will have a few thorns, but I’ll try to get past them. Oh, and Poison also taught us that you can unashamedly rhyme the words “tonight” and “all night” (because that’s when they wanted action and satisfaction, respectively). Here are some of the reality shows I’ve been watching and why you should join me.

New Content For Xbox Live Video Marketplace
Posted by Kyle Ulrich Categories: Xbox 360, Xbox Live, Xbox Live Marketplace,
Over in Microsoft’s camp, chest thumping has commenced with their announcement of over 7,000 pieces of digital content for their burgeoning, yet still controversial – see Guitar Hero II, horse armor – Xbox Live Marketplace. The month of June will absolutely clobber their current video collection with brand new stuff.
Geneon/Funimation is preparing an all new addition to the Video Marketplace stable: Anime! Akira, Samurai 7, Basilisk, and Lupin the 3rd should be tempting you as early as next week. It’s said that more are to come soon, so let’s cross our fingers for HD Evangelion and Samurai Champloo, shall we?
MTV is offering a slate of Country Music Television programs to the table, including Comedy Stage, Foxworthy’s Big Night Out, and Prankville. Another slate comes from the networks gay/lesbian channel, Logo, offering up The Big Gay Sketch Show and Noah’s Arc. While it’s nice to see companies attempting to broaden the current demographic, one has to wonder how this kind of content will do on the notoriously immature Xbox Live service.
The obligatory new movies are also on their way: Pan’s Labyrinth, Dreamgirls, Shooter, Black Snake Moan, Team America: World Police, and Letters from Iwo Jima are all scheduled to arrive in June.
