Android is running on half of the smartphones in the world

Are almost 50 percent of the world's smartphones running Google's Android? According to Monday data from Canalys, Android ended the second quarter with 48 percent of the market, with Asia Pacific leading the charge.
Globally, the smartphone market is up 73 percent from last year, with 107.7 million devices shipped in the last quarter. Of the 56 countries tracked by Canalys, Android topped 35 of them, with 51.9 million shipments overall.
Why the boost? Canalys pointed to strong Android support from major handset makers like Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, ZTE, and Huawei. Android holds 85 percent of the market in South Korea and 71 percent in Taiwan alone.
Apple came in second place with 20.3 million iPhones sold and 19 percent of the market, which was enough to overtake Nokia's Symbian platform and make Apple the world's top smartphone vendor.

Is this what the iPhone 5 will look like?

To be clear, this is not an iPhone 5. However, the word is that this is clone made in the same factory where the iPhone 5 is being produced. If you've been following Apple for any length of time, you'll know that before their new products launch, many Chinese manufacturers will already have cases for the products in production. This is typically because someone in the factory gets access to the blueprints, or a physical device, and goes and sells it for a nice profit. This is why a bunch of Foxconn workers were fired recently.
Anyhow, we've been hearing that the new iPhone 5 will be thinner than the iPhone 4, will sport curved glass on the back, and will have a slight teardrop shape. The phone in these images matches those specifications. However, it's hard to tell the size of the display here, but the iPhone 5 has long been rumored to have a larger display than the previous four devices that came before it. We're expecting the iPhone 5 to launch in late September or early October, which means that construction is definitely underway to prepare for the millions that need to be available for launch in the next 6-10 weeks. It wouldn't surprise us at all if what we see in these images turns out to be what we end up seeing in stores.

One of the major features of iOS 5 is the ability to update your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad over the air. Today with the release of iOS 5 beta 4, Apple has released the first ever OTA update for iOS to developers. We figured we'd grab a screenshot and give you a look at the process. You simply check for updates in the Settings area, and when it finds one, you tell it to download it. The image above shows the download in progress. Once finished, you're asked if you want to install. A few minutes later, you're up and running again.

Apple has been busy updating their Dev Center with even more iOS 5 goodness, and today developers can go and grab iOS 5 beta 4. However, if you are already running beta 3, then for the first time ever, you can perform an over-the-air (OTA) update directly from your device, with no need to use iTunes. We will have a video up soon to demonstrate. You can now grab iOS 5 beta 4 for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and Apple TV, alongside iTunes 10.5 beta 4 and Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview 4 for both Snow Leopard (4C139) and Lion (4D139.)

iPhone 5 set for Sprint and T-Mobile, AT&T in testing say reports

This week's "iPhone 5" rumors focus on the carriers. According to Piper Jaffray analyst Chris Larsen, via CNET, the "most noteworthy" change to Apple's next-generation iPhone is that it'll be offered by Sprint and T-Mobile, on top of existing carriers AT&T and Verizon.
In May, another analyst said an iPhone "4S" was launching on Sprint and T-Mobile in time for the Christmas holidays.
Meanwhile, ChipHazard reports that the next-generation iPhone is being field tested on AT&T's networks, according to a "well-placed sources in AT&T Mobility." The tests include signal reception and connectivity, and once they pass the tests the prototype will be given to manufacturers.
As for phone specs, there's an endless amount of speculation. Some of the more recent rumors include a completely revamped iPhone 5 with wireless juicing, a "baby iPhone" for developing markets.

Google-owned Photovine is now live - but what is it?

Another photo service is about to enter the digital space. The Web site for Photovine is live but lacking in information, other than a teaser video.
Photovine was built by a company named Slide which was acquired by Google in 2010. Google reportedly paid about $228 million for Slide.
The skimpy homepage is labeled "Photovine," with a tag that reads "plant a photo, watch it grow". There is one sentence under that reads, "Photovine is a fun way to learn more about your friends, meet new people, and share your world like never before."
The app is displayed in use on an iPhone 4 to the right of the text. That's thoroughly confusing given that Google owns the Photovine trademark. It stands to reason that an Android phone would be more apropos.

Clingo review: Mount your smartphone anywhere with ease

Buying a new cell phone or smartphone leads to the inevitable purchase of a new set of accessories. Car mounts, docks, and other add-ons tend to work with only one particular phone, leaving you with a slew of stands and cases lying around.
Allsop hopes to change that with Clingo, its line of universal wireless accessories. Not just your average mount or stand, each of the Clingo accessories uses an adhesive to keep your device in place, but it doesn't leave any residue behind. The company claims the sticky stuff will hold any device as long as it isn't in a case, won't leave any residue, and will stay sticky as long as you rinse it off periodically.
Allsop let us try out a handful of the sticky peripherals: the Podium, Mobile Stand, Game Wheel, Mobile Tether, Parabolic Sound Sphere, and Air Vent Mount.
