Google’s Taking Over TV, Too

It’s official: Google is in charge of the modern world. The Internet giant recently signed a deal which brings together HBO, Netflix, Pandora and the NBA under a new banner: Google TV.

It’s all part of Google’s multimillion-channel TV system, which will launch in the fall. The system runs on Google’s Android OS, making it possible for Web viewers to watch content on their television sets. And next fall, Google’s going to present Google Mind, which allows users to plug their brains directly into their computer systems. (We’re just kidding about that last bit … or, are we?)

NBC Universal, Time Warner and Twitter will also be involved, offering apps which will allow users to access content from their TVs. alone plans to offer 600-plus hours of programming (which just about covers the first two seasons of The Sopranos), and the NBA has created an app which will keep viewers updated on games and scores in real time. Google is hinting that even more news will unfold in the next few weeks.

NHL and HBO team up for reality series

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL,

Sidney CrosbyWhen the NHL started its “Winter Classic” tradition a few years ago, it received a lot of praise for coming up with a style of game that embraced its roots and actually generated some interest in hockey from those who normally wouldn’t dare ever watch the ice-bound sport. This year, they’re hoping to build on its success by pitting the game’s two biggest players – Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin – against each other. Also, they’ve tapped HBO to create a reality series documenting the road leading up to January’s outdoor game.

TV Talk: High Interest in Law & Order: LA, Low Numbers for HBO

Law & Order: Los Angeles-Which new shows are you looking forward to checking out? According to a TiVo poll, Law & Order: Los Angeles and Hawaii Five-0 are the most-anticipated programs of the upcoming season.

-When is an Oscar nominee not considered “famous enough”? When her name is Carey Mulligan. The Wall Street 2 star says she would love to be in Glee, but she’s apparently not recognizable enough for a cameo.

-Has HBO lost some of its appeal? Despite shows like True Blood, Entourage and Hung, the cable channel’s second quarter audience numbers were the lowest in four years. New series Boardwalk Empire begins this Sunday.

-Sunday Night Football, though, is doing just fine for NBC. This weekend’s game between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins scored the best overnight ratings for any opener—on a Sunday or Monday—in 13 years.

Comic Con International 2010: Super Ray and Dean Haspiel

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Reviews, Television, IDW Publishing,

Super RayOne of the things I enjoy most about the San Diego Comic Con is that I can always find stuff I didn’t know existed before I trundled down an aisle and stumbled across it.

The Birth Of Super Ray was one of those. Created by Jonathan Ames and Dean Haspiel, and published by IDW, the black-and-white, 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch, ashcan-sized delight ties into Ames’ TV series, Bored To Death on HBO. You know, the one with , Ted Danson and Jason Schwartzman.

The Birth Of Super Ray stars a stylized Galifianakis as a guy who - thanks to a subway accident - inadvertently becomes Super Ray, a character that the Galifianakis character created as a webcomic. Now, Super Ray has “a great responsibility to guard and protect Brooklyn.” The Birth of Super Ray is a fun, silly comic; a great freebie to drop into my bag as I made the rounds. My only “complaint” is that the whole thing wasn’t in color. The cover coloring is so awesome, I’d've liked to have seen it throughout.

If you missed your copy, you can download it from the HBO website.
